The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth

This docu-series looks into one of the most controversial cases in India in recent times. The rise and the fall of media personality Indrani Mukerjea. She was a former HR consultant and media executive and married to Peter Mukerjea, who founded INX Media. Indrani Mukerjea was arrested in connection with the alleged murder of her daughter, Sheena, in 2015. The case gained widespread attention due to its complex web of relationships and alleged motives. Sheena was believed to be in a relationship with Peter Mukerjea’s son, Rahul Mukerjea, which Indrani disapproved of. The series is based on her book Unbroken and is directed by Uraaz Bahl and Shaana Levy. For Netflix, this series follows the success of Indian docu-series like Indian Predator, Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee and Jessica Wongso, The Hunt for Veerappan and Curry & Cyanide – The Jolly Joseph Case.

This thriller features Bhumi Pednekar in the role of an investigative journalist who unravels a series of sexual assaults at a child shelter home. Directed by Pulkit, the film’s cast includes Sanjay Mishra, Aditya Srivastava, and Sai Tamhankar. The Muzaffarpur shelter home case reportedly inspires Bhakshak. The scandal was about an NGO which was running the shelter where 34 girls, aged between 7 and 17, were raped and assaulted for months. They were given sleeping pills and were inhumanly assaulted. The perpetrators were later arrested and sentenced in 2020.

This mass masala entertainer is helmed by Trivikram Srinivas, who has previously collaborated with Mahesh Babu’s blockbuster hits Athadu and Khaleja. After 12 years, the popular duo has reunited for this big-budget project. The film, which is touted to be an action drama, also stars Sreeleela, Meenakshi Chaudhary, Jagapathi Babu, Ramya Krishnan, Jayaram, Prakashraj, and Sunil. Mahesh Babu had no release in 2023, and he was last seen on the big screen in the 2022 film Sarkaru Vaari Paata.
The movie will stream on Netflix starting Feb 9, 2024. It may not be available in the MENA region.

What’s there to write about Animals that’s already not written about? The controversial Animal, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, had a stormy run in the theatres. It was a success, but liberals were up against the film. The movie looks at a complex relationship between a father and son, portrayed by Ranbir Kapoor and Anil Kapoor. The son’s love for his father knows no bounds. But it is a tempestuous relationship. Rashmika Mandanna, Bobby Deol, and Tripti Dimri are also in the cast.

This is billed as Netflix’s first original series for the year 2024 in India. The story is drawn in part from real life. A few years ago, a woman in Telangana murdered her husband and then showed her paramour as her late spouse. What eventually gave them away was the discrepancy in dietary preference – a bowl of mutton soup. The show stars Manoj Bajpayee as the husband and lover Prabhakar Shetty and Umesh Pillai, while Konkona Sen Sharma essays the wife Swathi Shetty’s role. Directed and co-written by Abhishek Chaubey and produced by Honey Trehan and Chetana Kowshik, the series also features Nasser, Sayaji Shinde, Lal, Anula Navlekar, Kani Kusruti, and Vaishali Bisht.
Extra Ordinary Man

Vakkantham Vamsi, who previously directed Naa Peru Surya, Naa Illu India, returns to direction with Nithiin-starrer Extra Ordinary Man. This kind of spoofy, fun film never takes itself seriously. Also in the cast are Sreeleela, Rajasekhar, Rao Ramesh, Rohini, Brahmaji, Sampath Raj and Harshavardhan. The film had an average run in theatrical release.
The movie will stream on Netflix from January 12, but it doesn’t seem to be available in the region.

The film is a delicate thread of emotions about love, loss, healing, awareness and liberation. The woman seeks closure in life before she runs out of memory. Three of Us earned a spot on the list of 25 films selected for the Indian Panorama 2022 at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) last year.

Shastry Viruddh Shastry is about grandparents who take care of their grandchild. But issues crop up between the oldies and their son who comes back and stakes claim his son. The grandfather is adamant and puts up a court battle, refusing to part with the child. Paresh Rawal and Neena Kulkarni play the grandparents. The film, directed by Nandita Roy and Shiboprasad Mukherjee, also features Amruta Subhash, Manoj Joshi, Neena Kulkarni and Shiv Pandit.

This Tamil movie had an average run at the theaters. This is Nayanthara’s 75th film, and is directed by debutant Nilesh Krishnaa. Jai, Sathyaraj, KS Ravikumar, Achyuth Kumar, Redin Kingsley, Kumari Sachu, Karthik Kumar, Renuka, Suresh Chakravarthy and Poornima Ravi are also part of the cast. Nayanthara plays an aspiring chef from an orthodox and religious family and she has to contend with many issues thereof.

Aadikeshava is an all-out action and commercial entertainer. It stars Panja Vaisshnav Tej in the male lead and Sreeleela as the female lead. Joju George plays the antagonist. Aparna Das, who was last seen in the Tamil film Dada also stars in a significant role. The film marks both Joju George’s and Aparna’s debut in Telugu. The film is written and directed by Srikanth N Reddy.

The series will track a crime journalist’s pursuit of a career-defining story. But she is caught between the powerful nexus of the police, the underworld, and the media and is charged with the murder of a fellow journalist. The series is inspired by real events and Jigna Vora’s book Behind Bars in Byculla: My Days in Prison. Written by Mrunmayee Lagoo Waikul and Mirat Trivedi, the human drama features a talented cast, including Karishma Tanna, Harman Baweja, Ravi Mahashabde, Zeeshan Aayub, and Prosenjit Chatterjee. The series is directed by the hot-shot Hansal Mehta, whose previous outing, Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story, was a big success.
Kathal – A Jackfruit Mystery

Starring Sanya Malhotra, Rajpal Yadav and Anant Joshi in the leads, Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery is said to be a quirky comedy by Ektaa Kapoor and Oscar winner filmmaker Guneet Monga. The satirical film, directed by Yashowardhan Mishra, stars Sanya Malhotra as a cop tasked with finding two missing jackfruits. Inspired by true events, the story is set in a fictional town called Moba.
The film also features Vijay Raaz, Anant Joshi, Rajpal Yadav, and Neha Saraf in pivotal roles. The story revolves around the theft of two jackfruits from a local politician’s garden and the young, ambitious police officer who must solve the mystery.
Drama I Tamil | Rating: PG15
The film is about a man with hearing and speech impediments who has a temper. His ear problem serves as the central conflict. His father’s life, as well as his own, is at risk due to an accident at a construction site. The plot centres on how he defends both himself and his father while dealing with his illness.
The film, directed by Harish Prabhu NS, has Arulnithi and Aathmika in the lead, while Bharathiraja plays the aged father character. Subatra Robert, Monekha Siva, Ashraf, AR Jeeva, Harish Somasundaram, Mahendran and Mullaiarasi are also in the cast.
