I Am Groot season 2 Review

THE GOOD
+ Great animation
+ Engaging mini stories
+ The Watcher
+ Baby Groot is adorable
THE BAD
– Only five episodes long
Following a similar pattern to the first season, each short episode of I Am Groot features the adorable seedling Baby Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) on a mini adventure. In the aptly titled first episode, Are You My Groot?, he makes friends with a Terma Baby Bird and tries to keep it as a pet.

The second miniclip, Groot Noses Around, finds little Groot getting his DIY on to try and change the batteries for his video game controller. Instead, he unexpectedly gets to experience a whole new sense.

As the title implies, Groot’s Snow Day starts as a fun snow day with hot cocoa and marshmallows. And then Groot has to fight off a giant snowman murderous robot. In the following instalment, we learn that the MCU includes an intergalactic ice-cream truck hoovering about in space. Can little Groot gather enough coins in time to buy a tasty treat?
In the last short, titled Groot and the Great Prophecy, Jeffrey Right lends his voice to The Watcher, who’s… well, watching one very important prophecy unfold. Can Groot bring the prophecy to life without missing out on nap time?
As each episode is only a few minutes long, you can watch the entire season in around 20 minutes. The MCU has released some dark and emotionally heavy content lately (see Secret Invasion), making I Am Groot a breath of fresh lightheartedness.

Adorable Baby Groot and Many Easter Eggs
Similarly to the first season, each minisode of I Am Groot includes several fun Easter Eggs for fans of the MCU. One episode features the prosthetic leg Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) claimed to need for a prison break in the first Guardians of the Galaxy. Speaking of prosthetics, the fake eye from the second Guardians of the Galaxy makes an appearance. And, of course, there is The Watcher’s cameo (the 5th Dimensional Being that played a part in several MCU movies), and we can even hear Rocket’s voice at one point, briefly.
The animation looks amazing, Groot’s mini adventures are engaging, and the series overall is fun to watch. This is the type of show you can thoroughly enjoy whether you’re a Marvel connoisseur or not.

The series’s end strongly implies that Baby Groot’s role in future MCU movies may be a lot more important than initially thought. He’s not just a cute twig with a short attention span and a love for video games.
I Am Groot is a hilarious series of short animations featuring the Guardians of the Galaxy fan favorite. While the third and alleged final movie in the GOTD series premiered earlier this year, based on these short animations, there’s a strong chance we’ll be seeing more of Groot and his crew in future movies.
