Escape Plan: The Extractors Review
- Sylvester Stallone
- Entertaining fight scenes
- Robotic acting
- Huge plot holes
- Bad special effects
The film starts with the kidnapping of a Chinese tech company heiress, Daya Zhang (Malese Jow), right from under her bodyguard Bao’s (Harry Shum Jr.) nose. While the kidnappers leave Bao alive, they also leave him with a personal message on a flash drive addressed to security expert Ray Breslin (Stallone).
Breslin and his team have come across Shen Lo (Max Zhang), who used to be a bodyguard for Daya’s father but is now going up against the tech giant. While outwardly, Zhang Innovations is a multi-billion tech company, they also dabble in building high-tech secret prisons, as the one Breslin escaped from in the first movie. It’s revealed that Zhang Innovations was responsible for building that high-tech boat prison, and they have several other projects planned.

At first, Breslin doesn’t want to get involved in all that mess again, but the same villain who kidnapped Daya also captures his beloved girlfriend, Abigail Ross (Jaime King). And the man behind the kidnappings is none other than Lester Clark Jr. (Devon Sawa), the son of Breslin’s former business partner (played by Vincent D’Onofrio in a brief flashback), who betrayed him in the first Escape Plan. Clark Jr. is angry at what happened to his father and wants to make Breslin suffer the consequences.
As both women are kept in a secret Latvian prison, Breslin and his team, including his associate Trent DeRosa (Bautista) and Hush the hacker (50 Cent), must get to Daya and Abigail before Clark Jr. gets his revenge.
A decent low-budget action flick
2013’s Escape Plan marked the first time we saw action legends Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger on screen together. It was a thrilling action flick with both actors doing what they do best. It was also a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster with all the bells and whistles of an expensive movie.

It would be easy to dismiss Escape Plan: The Extractors as nowhere near as good as the first movie, but considering they made it on a fraction of the original’s budget, the resulting feature is a rather impressive feat. It is better than the 2018 sequel Escape Plan 2: Hades, which had almost ten times the budget.
The acting could have been better, and the story could have been more coherent. But the movie is pretty entertaining. The fight scenes are well choreographed, the special effects look good enough, and the narrative makes enough sense not to be confusing.

However, the dialogue is robotic, and there are some gaping plot holes (for example, how did Clark Jr. know the exact method of his father’s demise?). None of the characters act as actual people would, and the few attempts at humour make almost no sense.
While this isn’t exactly a good movie, it’s as good as it gets considering the shoe-string budget. Keep your expectations low and you’ll find this feature entertaining.
What are other critics saying about Escape Plan: The Extractors?
Justin Watches Movies wasn’t too impressed with the movie and wishes Bautista had more screen time.
Ramboraph4life thought the film looked cheap and the story could have been told in a shorter runtime.
