Best Shahid Kapoor Movies

As ever, the disclaimer that this is a subjective list and some choices are also based on the availability of streaming platforms applies. With that out of the way, let’s take a look at the best Shahid Kapoor movies.

Ishq Vishk (2003)

It has been 21 years since Shahid Kapoor made his debut (as a hero) in this college romance in 2003. The college rom-com, featuring Amrita Rao, and Shenaz Treasurywala, captivated audiences and propelled Shahid to stardom.

Directed by Ken Ghosh, the film was an Indianised version love triangle template of Archies comics. The peppy songs and youthful vibe made the film an instant hit, and a star was well and truly born.

The pair of Shahid and Amrita was so good that they were recast soon in Vivah (2006).

Chup Chup Ke (2006)

The Malayalam movie director Priyadarshan made a smart transition to Bollywood by reprising popular movies from Kerala in Hindi.

He won a name for himself through comedic capers and fun movies like Hera Pheri, Hulchul, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa, among others.

Chup Chup Ke is the remake of the Malayalam film Punjabi House (1998), which starred Dileep in the lead. This film was originally titled Khatta Meetha.

The lead pair was Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan. Then, Neha Dhupia took the lead. Chup Chup Ke turned out to be a commercial success.

Jab We Met (2007)

Jab We Met is among the most loved movies in Hindi this century. This is an all-season favourite across the country.

Shahid Kapoor as the brooding Aditya and the incessantly talkative Kareena as Geet walked into the consciousness of the Indian public with winsome performances.

This Imtiaz Ali movie re-releases every Valentine’s Day in India and is popular even now. The songs are among the hall-of-farmers.

This film cemented his place among the top stars in the industry. This film guarantees love and laughter and is easily one of the best Shahid Kapoor movies.

Kaminey (2009)

It is in the opposite zone of Jab We Met. Dark and heavy, Kaminey underscored Shahid’s acting chops as he played the dual roles of twins, one with a lisp and the other with a stutter, over a single day.

Written and directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, the film also had Priyanka Chopra and Amole Gupte in the lead roles.

The story, set against the backdrop of the Mumbai underworld, showed that Shahid can handle characters with different layers and shades. A total change from his usual chocolate-box-good-looking hero story.

Haider (2014)

Another collaboration with Vishal Bhardwaj, Haider showed why Shahid is among the top stars. He proved his versatility in this complex and compelling tale that is set in the insurgency-hit Kashmir conflicts of 1995.

Haider is a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet based on Basharat Peer’s memoir Curfewed Night.

The film also stars Tabu, Kay Kay Menon, Irrfan Khan, and Shraddha Kapoor.  As you can say, it is a heavyweight cast- bu holding his own it turned out to be one of the best Shahid Kapoor movies.

Padmaavat (2018)

A blockbuster hit, Padmaavat, helmed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is a tale of valour and sacrifice. It celebrated a Rajput queen’s willingness to die rather than give herself over to a tyrant who coveted her.

Deepika Padukone played the titular character. Shahid Kapoor played Mewar’s Rajput king, Maharawal Ratan Singh, her husband. Ranveer Singh essayed the role of Alauddin Khilji. The grand movie again showed Shahid’s ability to retain his poise amidst bigger stars.

Batti Gul Meter Chalu (2018)

The social drama narrates the story of a man who takes on power distribution companies for charging exorbitant rates.

Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor and Yami Gautam helmed the lead roles. Shahdi simply aced the role of Sushil Kumar ‘S.K.’ Pant, the commoner who takes on the system and exorbitant electricity charges.

There was sincerity in his performance that didn’t go unnoticed despite the film having only an average run in the theatres.

Kabir Singh (2019)

Kabir Singh is the most controversial movie of Shahid’s career. As with the recent Animal, this Vanga Reddy movie was panned by feminists and liberals for being misogynistic and celebrating toxic masculinity.

This remake of the Telugu hit Arjun Reddy (2017) showcased Shahid’s talent in handling characters with trouble in the mind.

Shahid plays a surgeon who spirals into self-destruction after his girlfriend leaves him. Kiara Advani,  Adil Hussain, Nikita Dutta, Arjan Bajwa, and Suresh Oberoi are also part of the cast.

The film is the highest-grosser in Shahid’s career.

Jersey (2022)

Also a remake of the Telugu film of the same name, Jersey is an antithesis of Kabir Singh in that Shahid plays a role full of warmth and love.

He plays the character of a former cricketer who returns to the game for his son’s wish to buy a sporting T-Shirt. His scenes with his real-life dad Pankaj Kapoor are among the highlights of the film.

Shahid shone in this sports cum emotional drama, and minus his solid showing, the film would have fallen flat.

Farzi (2023)

Farzi was Shahid’s digital debut. And like his first film, this turned out to be a winner all the way.

This black comedy crime thriller was directed by Raj & DK, who had earlier created the enjoyable The Family Man series.

Shahid Kapoor, as a rebuffed artist, takes to the crime of counterfeit money. It was a bravura performance and confirmed his presence among the top bracket of stars. The 8-episode series proved to be an engrossing crime drama.

Shahid Kapoor is not a Muslim. He was born in New Delhi to actor Pankaj Kapoor and Neelima Azeem.

Shahid Kapoor is 42 years old. He was born on February 25, 1981.

Although they share the same surname, they are not cousins or related to each other. They, however, dated for a few years before parting ways.

In a 2023 interview, Shahid Kapoor claimed he had stopped smoking for over 5-6 years. He is currently not a smoker.

Shahid Kapoor is 5′ 7″ (or 1.72m) tall.
