Thankam
We had Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Gold release recently. Now, Thankam, which also means gold, is arriving with Biju Menon and Vineeth Srinivasan in the leads. The latter is fresh after the success of Mukundan UnniAssociates. Aparna Balamurali and Girish Kulkarni are also in the cast. Directed by Saheed Arafath, Thankam is said to be a thriller set in the backdrop of the gold business in Tamil Nadu. National award winner Syam Pushkaran has scripted the film. Fahadh Faasil, Dileesh Pothan, and Syam Pushkaran have jointly produced the movie.

Alone
Alone is a single-actor film set during the pandemic. Headlined by Mohanlal, the film is said to be a supernatural thriller that happens in an apartment complex. Produced by Monanlal’s trusted Aashirvad Cinemas and directed by Shaji Kai the film has interesting voice-overs. The likes of Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manju Warrier and Siddique have lent their voices to various characters. Abhinandan Ramanujam and Pramod K Pillai are the cinematographers, and The band 4 Musics, which earlier worked on Mohanlal’s Oppam, has composed the music.

Poovan
Vineeth Vasudevan, who was seen as an actor in the highly entertaining Super Sharanya, has turned a director. His debut is a feel-good comedy-drama Poovan, which revolves around a neighbourhood and a gaggle of friends and their families. The story basically revolves around a rooster as a series of incidents happen around it. Antony Varghese, Varun Dhara, Vineeth Vishwam and Sajin Cherukayil are in the cast.

Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam
With Mammootty in the lead, and directed by the hot-shot director Lijo Jose Pellissery, Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam is a highly anticipated film. It premiered recently at the 27th International Film Festival of Kerala, and some critics and film personalities who saw the film have declared it to be Lijo Jose’s best directorial yet.
This film is slotted as a satirical comedy and revolves around a drama artist named James, who begins to behave like a missing man named Sundaram, who belongs to a rural village on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border. Mammootty, who is a master of dialects on screen, gets to speak in Malayalam and Tamil (the film’s title itself is in Tamil, by the way.) veteran Ashokan is making a comeback in this film which also stars, among others, Ramya Pandian, Kainakary Thankaraj, T Suresh Babu, Ashwath Ashok Kumar and Rajesh Sharma. Mammootty has co-produced the movie with Lijo Jose Pellissery.

Malikappuram
Unni Mukundan is an actor who has been hovering on the fringes without a hit. But Malikappuram seems to have changed that. Malikappuram, directed by debutant Vishnu Sasi Shankar, narrates the story of an eight-year-old girl who wishes to go on Sabarimala pilgrimage. She travels to Sabarimala along with her classmate to offer prayers to Lord Ayyappa. Unni Mukundan plays a pivotal role in the film. Thanks to the positive response to the film, the producers have decided to dub it in Tamil and release it in Tamil Nadu.

Ayisha
Actress Manju Warrier was part of the Tamil film Thunivu released last week. This week, the stars in the Malayalam film Ayisha. Directed by debutant Aamir Pallikal, Ayisha is shot in the UAE, and is being touted as the first-ever Indo-Arab collaboration. It is being released in multiple languages including Arabic.
The story happens in an Arab background and about 80% of the artists are from other countries. They speak their language in the movie. It is the tale of a young woman who becomes a domestic worker because of her financial situation. She migrates to a foreign country. Classmates fame Radhika and Egyptian actor Islam Abdelgawwad are also in the cast.

Kaapa
Malayalam star Prithviraj Sukumarn is adroitly mixing his choice of films. He alternates between totally commercial potboilers and sensitive/serious cinema. With Kaapa, it’s the former. Helmed by the master of masala movies Shaji Kailas, Kaapa typically delves into the world of crime and gang wars. Set in Thiruvananthapuram, the story is by noted writer GR Indugopan. Aside from Prithviraj, Aparna Balamurali, Anna Ben, and Asif Ali also play pivotal roles in the film.

Anandam Paramanadam
Anandam Paramanandam, scripted by M Sindhuraj, is a comedy caper. The talented Sharaf-U-Dheen plays a Gulf returnee in the film. He has a drinking problem. His father-in-law, who is also fond of the glass, sets out to fix his problem. The comedy arising out of this is the crux of the film. The film also stars Indrans, Aju Varghese, Baiju Santhosh, Sadiq, Sinoy Varghese, Harikrishnan, OP Unnikrishnan, Nisha Sarang, and Thinkalazhcha Nishchayam-fame Anagha Narayanan. director Shafi, on a comeback, helms the film.

Directed by Tharun Moorthy of ‘Operation Java’ fame, Saudi Vellakka is a social drama about a small court case that gets needlessly dragged for 13 years. It is about a spat between neighbors that takes an ugly turn. The film features Lukman Lukku, Binu Pappan, Vincy Aloshious, Remya Suresh, and Nilja K Baby.

Oh Meri Laila
This is a college campus romance story. It features Antony Varghese, the Pepe from Angamaly Diaries, who is yet to shrug off that image. In this film, he plays a college student who isn’t all that lucky with his love overtures. Nandana Rajan plays the female lead. Balachandran Chullikad, Johnny Antony, Senthil Krishna, Nandu, Kichhu Tellus, Sivakami, and Sreeja Nair are also part of the cast. The film is directed by Antony’s friend and batchmate, Abhishek KS.

This is billed as a horror comedy and has Soubin Shahir in the lead. The film is scripted by Rajesh Gopinadhan, who previously wrote the Dulquer Salmaan-starrer Kali. The film is directed by Sidharth Bharathan, whose previous last release was Chathuram, that underwhelming thriller with Swasika Vijay and Roshan Mathew as the leads.

Besides playing the lead, Prithviraj also co-produced the film, which also stars Ajmal Ameer, Krishna Sankar, Shabareesh Varma, Chemban, Vinod Jose, Vinay Forrt and Roshan Mathew, among others.

Guru Somasundaram, after his popular performance against Tovino Thomas in Minnal Murali, is now pitted against Biju Menon on Naalam Mura. Biju Menon plays a cop and is up against a crafty criminal played by Guru Somasundaram. The latter, with his mind games, keeps the cop at bay. This thriller, directed by Deepu Anthikad. Divya Pillai plays the female lead, and the film also features Shantipriya, Sheelu Abraham, Prasanth Alexander, and Alencier Ley Lopez.

The Teacher is a revenge drama that delves into sexual harassment faced by women. Amala plays a physical instructor at a school. She also leads a happy personal life along with a caring husband. But tragedy strikes. A scandalous video, presumably involving her, goes viral. It turns her life upside down. And she, unlike others, decides to confront her villains. The Teacher is helmed by Vivek of Athiran fame. Apart from Amala Paul, it also stars Hakkim Shah, Chemban Vinod Jose, I M Vijayan and Manju Pillai.

The story revolves around a doctor who confesses to the police of murdering someone. The cops also discover two more bodies, neither of which the doctor claims to have killed. The murder mystery, directed by Sudeesh Ramachandran and written by Ranjith Unni, stars Aparna Balamurali in the main role. The crime drama also features Harish Uthaman, Kalabhavan Shajohn, Chandhunadh, Siddique, Jaffer Idukki and Siddharth Menon.
