Oru Bharatha Sarkaar Ulpannam

Billed as a social drama, the plot revolves around the idea of male sterilization. A government project needs men for sterilization, and the search for the same turns out to be funny as well, revealing the societal mindset. Typically, there is humour as well as social commentary. Directed by TV Ranjith, the film stars Aju Varghese, Gouri G Kishan, Subish Sudhi, Shelly, Vineeth Vasudev, and Jaffer Idukki, among others.

Aattam

Malayalam | Thriller | Rating: PG15

Aattam, written and directed by debutant Anand Ekarshi, is a chamber drama like 12 Angry Men that explores gender politics and human hypocrisies. The film has received rave reviews and is already among the best releases of the year. It also did well on the film festival circuit. Aattam boasts a talented cast, including Vinay Forrt, Zarin Shihab, Kalabhavan Shajohn, Aji Thiruvankulam, Jolly Antony, and Madan Babu, among others.

Anweshippin Kandethum

Malayalam | Thriller | Rating: UA

Darwin Kuriakose directs Anweshippin Kandethum. It stars Tovino Thomas in the lead role and is a thriller that centres on an investigation into the murder of a young lady. Tovino plays a cop who reopens an unclosed murder mystery, even if it means the police have to resort to unofficial means. The film also stars Siddique, Indrans, Shammy Thilakan, Baburaj, Vineeth Thattil, Ramya Suvi, Harisree Ashokan and Rahul Rajagopal. The movie was praised when it was released in the theatres. In a season when Malayalam movies are the rage, Anweshippin Kandethum is among the impressive ones.

Thalavan

Malayalam | Thriller | Rating: UA

This is an investigative thriller starring Biju Menon and Asif Ali in lead roles. Two police officers of different ranks caught up in an ego clash form the crux of this movie. Dileesh Pothen plays a crucial role, while Anushree and Miya are the female leads. The supporting cast includes Kottayam Nazeer, Shankar Ramakrishnan, Joji K John, Dinesh, Anuroop, Nandan Unni, and Bilas. Jis Joy directs the film. Both Biju Menon and Asif Ali are not new to playing cop roles in films.

Manjummel Boys

Malayalam | Comedy | Rating: U

Manjummel Boys is based on the real-life rescue efforts of a youth who had fallen into the Guna caves, also known as Devil’s Kitchen, in Kodaikanal. The place shot into fame after Kamal Haasan’s 1991 Tamil movie Guna. Manjummel Boys is about a bunch of friends who set out on a vacation trip. It turns into a nightmare when one of them falls into some of the deepest pits in the cave, following which the friends and police launch a rescue operation. The survival thriller stars Soubin Shahir, Sreenath Bhasi, Balu Varghese, Ganapathy and Jean Paul Lal in the lead roles. The film is written and directed by Chidambaram of Jan. E. Man fame. Hence a lot of fun is expected even though the genre is slightly different.

Poacher

Hindi, Malayalam | Crime, Drama | Rating: PG15

This 8-episode series is the courageous tale of Indian Forest officials, NGO workers and animal lovers who work together to stop ivory poachers and smugglers. Alia Bhatt is one of the executive producers of the series. Nimisha Sajayan, Roshan Mathew, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Kani Kusruti, Ranjitha Menon, and Maala Parvathi are among the cast. Delhi Crime creator-director Richie Mehta has helmed this project. Poacher is made in three languages — Malayalam, English and Hindi. Poacher showcases the perils that elephants face due to human greed.

Bramayugam

Malayalam | Horror | Rating: PG13

This horror film is set in the 18th century when the Portuguese arrived in Kerala. Mammootty plays a feudal lord who has a knack for dark magic. The film’s highlight is that it’s in dark black and white. The last B&W film in Malayalam was Ente Gramam (1984). The film is helmed by Rahul Sadasivan, whose previous work was Bhoothakalam, a solid paranormal and psychological drama. Arjun Ashokan, Sidharth Bharathan, Amalda Liz, and Manikandan R Achari star in key roles in Bramayugam.

Marivillin Gopurangal

Malayalam | Horror | Rating: PG13

Billed as a feel-good entertainer, Marivillin Gopurangal is directed by Arun Bose. It stars Indrajith Sukumaran, Shruti Ramachandran, Sarjano Khalid,  and Vincy Aloshious in prominent roles. The film also has Vasisht Umesh and Roro in the cast. The movie is written and co-directed by Pramod Mohan, who earlier scripted Lalitham Sundaram and directed Orayiram Kinakkalal.

Thundu

Malayalam | Comedy | Rating: PG13

Thundu is directed by debutant Riyas Shereef, with Biju Menon as a constable in the lead. Going by the trailer, Biju Menon is constable Baby, who grapples with the fear of taking an exam for a promotion in his service. As he contemplates cheating in his exam, his son is caught and reprimanded for cheating in school. It is a movie that looks at the emotional aspects, ego conflicts, and personal problems of cops. Shine Tom Chacko, Unnimaya Prasad, Shaju Sreedhar, Noushad Ali, and Zhinz Shan are also in the cast.

Iyer in Arabia

Malayalam | Comedy | Rating: 18+

Iyer in Arabia is a family entertainment that parodies various modern issues, such as the generation gap and moral policing under the guise of religion. Director MA Nishad, who likes to take on subjects of social importance, handles a similar one. But the accent here is on fun and spoof. This quirky family drama has in the cast, among others, Mukesh Madhavan, Dhyan Sreenivasan, Shine Tom Chacko, Urvashi, Prajod Kalabhavan, Durga, and Alencier Ley Lopez.

Premalu

Malayalam | Comedy | Rating: 18+

This is a rom-com with a love triangle story that happens in Hyderabad. Girish A D, who had earlier helmed similar fun-filled youth subjects like Super Sharanya and Thanneer Mathan Dinangal, explored contemporary relationship dynamics in his typical style again. Young actors Naslen and Mamitha Baiju lead the cast.  Mohan, Shyam, Althaf Salim, Akhila Bhargavan, Sangeeth Prathap and Meenakshi Raveendran are also part of the supporting cast. Mathew Thomas also plays a cameo.

LLB

Malayalam | Thriller | Rating: PG15

LLB actually expands to ‘Lifeline of Bachelors’. This is the story of friends who get caught in intriguing life situations. The embattled actor Srinath Bhasi headlines the cast. The family entertainer cum thriller also features Vishak Nair, Aswath Lal, Roshan Aboobacker, Pradeep Balan, Sudheesh, Seema G Nair and Ramesh Kottayam in supporting roles.

The film marks the directorial debut of A M Sidhique, who is an Assistant Commissioner of Police. The movie takes place on a campus and is filled with romance, friendship, and some suspense.

Malaikottai Vaaliban

Malayalam | Action | Rating: PG13

The film marks the first on-screen collaboration between superstar Mohanlal and celebrated filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery. The period film, which was in the making for over a year, is also expected to be a visual treat. As per the promos, the story revolves around a warrior whose life takes a different turn after he comes across a famous dancer and an evil force. How the warrior tackles the challenges is the crux of the story. Aside from Mohanlal, the film features Sonalee Kulkarni, Andrea Ravera, Danish Sait, Hareesh Peradi, Manikandan R Achari, Katha Nandi, and Rajeev Pillai, among others, in key roles. Lijo Jose Pellissery and PS Rafeeque jointly pen the fantasy drama. 

Neru

Malayalam | Courtroom Drama | Rating: PG15

This Mohanlal starrer showed how a sensitive rape case could be shown with dignity and courage. Helmed by Jeethu Joseph, the Malayalam movie revolves around a blind sculptor who the scion of a wealthy businessman rapes. The edge-of-the-seat legal drama also features Anaswara Rajan, Priyamani, Santhi Mayadevi, Siddique, and Jagadish in prominent roles. It is among the biggest hits of the season and the film was noted for its even-tone.
