The talk of the week is Pathaan, which releases on January 25 and stars the Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. The man is coming back from a hiatus of 5 years. Pathaan is being aggressively promoted by him and the production house YRF. Being the week of the Indian Republic Day, there are plenty of other releases that are clamouring for attention from the viewers.

With Shah Rukh Khan returning to the big screen after a gap of five years, Pathaan is the cynosure of all eyes. The film, a typical action adventure involving an Indian spy, is to be placed in the Gulf region. Directed by Siddharth Anand (who has made films like Bang Bang and War before), Pathaan is believed to be part of the YRF spy universe (Yash Raj Films).
YRF spy universe is centred on a series of spy action-thriller films produced by Yash Raj Films, which feature various fictional RAW agents. Pathaan is said to feature an extended cameo appearance by Avinash Singh Rathore, aka Tiger (Salman Khan) from Ek Tha Tiger. Deepika Padukone is the female lead, while John Abraham plays the antagonist in Pathaan.

Alone is a single-actor film set during the pandemic. Headlined by Mohanlal, the film is said to be a supernatural thriller that happens in an apartment complex. Produced by Monanlal’s trusted Aashirvad Cinemas and directed by Shaji Kai the film has interesting voice-overs. The likes of Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manju Warrier and Siddique have lent their voices to various characters. Abhinandan Ramanujam and Pramod K Pillai are the cinematographers, and The band 4 Musics, which earlier worked on Mohanlal’s Oppam, has composed the music.

3. Gandhi Godse: Ek Yudh
This period drama is said to explore what would have happened if Mahatma Gandhi had lived after the assassination attempt by Nathuram Godse. The sensitive nature of the subject has triggered many controversies. The film is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, whose last release was a decade ago with the Shahid Kapoor-starrer Phata Poster Nikhla Hero in 2013. The film has Deepak Antani and Chinmay Mandlekar reprising the characters of Mahatma Gandhi and Nathuram Godse respectively.

We had Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Gold release recently. Now, Thankam, which also means gold, is arriving with Biju Menon and Vineeth Srinivasan in the leads. The latter is fresh after the success of Mukundan UnniAssociates. Aparna Balamurali and Girish Kulkarni are also in the cast. Directed by Saheed Arafath, Thankam is said to be a thriller set in the backdrop of the gold business in Tamil Nadu. National award winner Syam Pushkaran has scripted the film. Fahadh Faasil, Dileesh Pothan, and Syam Pushkaran have jointly produced the movie.

5. An Action Hero
The film, starring the ever-experimenting Ayushmann Khurrana, is the story of a screen action hero who is leading a life in hiding following a film shoot mishap that puts paid to his acting career. Jaideep Ahlawat and Jitender Hooda are also in the cast. Akshay Kumar has a guest role in the film, which also has two item numbers from Malaika Arora and Nora Fatehi. The film, when it was released in theatres in December last and got good reviews but did not do all that well at the box office. Debutant Anirudh Iyer has directed the film that is produced by Anand L Rai and Bhushan Kumar.
