Yodha
Hindi | Action | Rating: PG15
This action thriller film, directed by Sagar Ambre and Pushkar Ojha, has Sidharth Malhotra playing an off-duty soldier who finds himself aboard a hijacked passenger plane. He has to use his wits and physical skills to outwit the villains and save the other passengers. And there is also a typical personal redemption arc to his brave efforts. The action happens in the sky, adding to the tension and tumult. Raashii Khanna and Disha Patani play the female leads, and supporting performances are from Sammy Jonas Heaney, Sharik Khan, and Siddharth Kumar Choudhary.
Oru Bharatha Sarkaar Ulpannam
Malayalam | Comedy | Rating: 18TC
Billed as a social drama, the plot revolves around the idea of male sterilization. A government project needs men for sterilization, and the search for the same turns out to be funny as well, revealing the societal mindset. Typically, there is humour as well as social commentary. Directed by TV Ranjith, the film stars Aju Varghese, Gouri G Kishan, Subish Sudhi, Shelly, Vineeth Vasudev, and Jaffer Idukki, among others.
Bastar: The Naxal Story

Directed by Sudipto Sen and Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the film is reportedly based on the real-life incidents of the Naxalite–Maoist insurgency in the Bastar district of Chhattisgarh. The story takes off from the Bastar rebellion that broke out in 1910. The cast is headlined by Adah Sharma. Others in the acting team include Vijay Krishna, Raima Sen, Shilpa Shukla, Anangsha Biswas, Yashpal Sharma, Subrat Dutta, Indira Tiwari, and Kishore Kadam. Amarnath Jha co-writes the film. There is good expectation riding on this film.
Gaami
Telugu | Adventure | Rating: 15+
Touted to be an adventure story, the story, as outlined by the press handouts, has three strands. One is about an Aghora who cannot experience human touch. The second is about a young estranged daughter of Devadasi who is facing death. The third is about a youth facing torture in an illegal medical facility. These different stories neatly converge at one point and move on. Directed by Vidyadhar Kagita, the film is headlined by Vishwak Sen. Others in the cast include Chandini Chowdary, MG Abhinaya, Mohammad Samad and Harika Pedada.
Murder Mubarak

Perhaps the most anticipated release of the week. Murder Mubarak is a thriller set around a murder that happens at an upscale club in New Delhi. The investigating cop, played by Pankaj Tripathi, figures out that everyone in the plot is a suspect. But he also realizes there is so much more than what meets the eye. This whodunnit is a cinematic adaptation of Anuja Chauhan’s novel Club You To Death and is directed by Homi Adajania. The film features an ensemble cast including Pankaj Tripathi, Sara Ali Khan, Vijay Varma, Dimple Kapadia, Karisma Kapoor, Sanjay Kapoor, Tisca Chopra, Suhail Nayyar and Tara Alisha Berry. The makers promise a unique mix of suspense and comedy.
Aattam
Malayalam | Thriller | Rating: PG15
Aattam, written and directed by debutant Anand Ekarshi, is a chamber drama like 12 Angry Men that explores gender politics and human hypocrisies. The film has received rave reviews and is already among the best releases of the year. It also did well on the film festival circuit. Aattam boasts a talented cast, including Vinay Forrt, Zarin Shihab, Kalabhavan Shajohn, Aji Thiruvankulam, Jolly Antony, and Madan Babu, among others.
Bramayugam
Malayalam | Horror | Rating: PG13
This horror film is set in the 18th century when the Portuguese arrived in Kerala. Mammootty plays a feudal lord who has a knack for dark magic. The film’s highlight is that it’s in dark black and white. The last B&W film in Malayalam was Ente Gramam (1984). The film is helmed by Rahul Sadasivan, whose previous work was Bhoothakalam, a solid paranormal and psychological drama. Arjun Ashokan, Sidharth Bharathan, Amalda Liz, and Manikandan R Achari star in key roles in Bramayugam. The film was widely welcomed on its theatrical release last month.
Main Atal Hoon

This eponymous film is about the life and times of India’s former prime minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a widely admired and respected leader in his own right. Helmed by Ravi Jadhav, the biopic also focuses on the popular poetic side of the politician. Award-winning actor Pankaj Tripathi plays the role of Vajpayee. The film also stars Piyush Mishra, Raja Rameshkumar Sevak, Daya Shankar Pandey, Pramod Pathak, Paayal Kapoor Nair, Harshad Kumar, Prasanna Ketkar, Haresh Khatri, Paula McGlynn, Gauri Sukhtankar.
Vadakkupatti Ramasamy

Vadakkupatti Ramasamy is actor Santhanam’s assembly line movie. It is a bunch of jokes stitched together in a seeming script. You know, films like DD and DD return. Vadakkupatti Ramasamy, a character made famous by Goundamani, is helmed by Karthik Yogi, who previously directed Santhanam’s Dikkilona. VR is billed as a period comedy-drama around what looks like a shady godman. Apart from Santhanam, the film has cast Tamizh, Megha Akash, John Vijay, MS Bhaskar, Rajendran, Seshu, Ravi Mariya, and Nizhalgal Ravi, among others.
