The Mandalorian and Grogu will stream on Disney+ from September 2, closing out a theatrical run that made it the lowest-grossing live-action Star Wars film.
The Mandalorian and Grogu’s Disney+ release date
The date was confirmed on August 14 by the official Star Wars account. The film premiered in cinemas on May 22 and ended its run with $345 million worldwide.
The release is global, so UAE subscribers get it the same day. Disney+ usually adds new titles at midnight Pacific Time, which is 11am in the UAE.
Why the early trip to streaming?
The film cost $165 million to make and took $345 million worldwide, the lowest live-action Star Wars haul and below Solo’s $393 million. Its second weekend fell 69 per cent.
Disney has called the film and last month’s live-action Moana underperformers in its latest earnings, with merchandise sales as the consolation prize.
IGN rated it 5/10, concluding that anyone after a Star Wars film that “thrills, surprises, challenges” will not find it here.
What is The Mandalorian and Grogu about?
Directed by Jon Favreau and co-written with Dave Filoni, the film picks up after The Mandalorian season 3 and Ahsoka season 1. Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu are recruited by Colonel Ward (Sigourney Weaver) to rescue Rotta the Hutt, voiced by Jeremy Allen White. Martin Scorsese appears as a fry cook named Hugo Durant.
