Amazon wants to use artificial intelligence (AI) to summarize product reviews in a new feature they announced last Monday, August 14, 2023.
This new review summary feature was tested earlier this year in the US and is designed to help shoppers quickly understand what other customers say about a particular product. With this, customers won’t need to look through dozens of reviews to know whether it’s worth it.

According to a blog post by Amazon, the AI summaries will pick out common themes and highlight them in a short paragraph on the product page.
In addition to the summaries, Amazon will offer a product insights feature that will allow customers to filter by certain attributes like “ease of use” or “performance.” Customers can tap on these and see the reviews that mention them.
Launching these AI-powered features is part of Amazon’s effort to integrate generative AI into their products and services and make the life of their customers a lot easier.
Keeping It Authentic
Since the summaries will be AI-generated, accuracy and authenticity are a major concern. The summaries will only be based on verified purchase reviews to mitigate this.
Amazon is also taking the necessary steps by proactively investing significant resources to stop fake reviews.
This is just the start of generative AI integration for Amazon. According to CEO Andy Jassy, they are working on many other projects, including using the technology with their device unit to integrate with Alexa.
