MediaTek, one of the leading chipmakers in the world, has just announced its latest flagship processor, the Dimensity 9300. This new chip is designed to power the next generation of Android smartphones, especially in the Asian market.

Only Big Cores

A powerful CPU with only big cores: The Dimensity 9300 has eight CPU cores, but unlike most processors that use a mix of big and small cores for performance and efficiency, the Dimensity 9300 uses only big cores.

This means the chip can deliver faster and more consistent performance across all tasks, from gaming to multitasking. The Dimensity 9300 has one Cortex-X4 core clocked at 3.25GHz, three Cortex-X4 cores at 2.85GHz, and four Cortex-A720 cores at 2.0GHz.

MediaTek claims this configuration offers 40% improved peak performance and 33% less power consumption than its predecessor, the Dimensity 9200.

GPU with Ray-Tracing

A boosted GPU with ray-tracing support: The Dimensity 9300 also features a new GPU, the Mali-G720 Immortalis MP12, which has 12 cores and supports hardware-driven ray-tracing.

Ray-tracing is a technique that simulates realistic lighting and shadows in 3D graphics, creating more immersive and lifelike visuals. The Dimensity 9300 is the second chip to feature this technology, after the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 from Qualcomm.

MediaTek says that the Mali-G720 Immortalis MP12 is 46% more powerful than the previous generation and can handle high-end games and VR applications with ease.

AI Processing Capabilities

Doubled AI processing power: The Dimensity 9300 also boasts a significant improvement in AI processing power, thanks to its new APU 5.0. This is a dedicated unit that handles AI tasks, such as face recognition, voice assistants, and camera enhancements.

The APU 5.0 can deliver up to 8 TOPS (trillion operations per second) of AI performance, twice as much as the Dimensity 9200. This means the Dimensity 9300 can support more advanced and faster AI features, such as on-device style diffusion, which can generate artistic images in less than a second.

Improved Connectivity and Display Options

Comprehensive connectivity and display support: The Dimensity 9300 also supports a wide range of connectivity and display options, making it compatible with the latest standards and technologies.

For example, the chip supports 5G sub-6GHz and mmWave networks, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, and GPS L5. It also supports up to 24GB of LPDDR5 RAM, UFS 3.1 storage, and 200MP cameras. Moreover, the chip can drive displays with up to 144Hz refresh rate, 10-bit colour depth, and HDR10+ certification.

When will we see phones with Dimensity 9300?

The Dimensity 9300 is expected to debut in the first quarter of 2024. It will likely power some of the most popular and affordable Android flagships from brands like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Realme.

It’s definitely exciting to see MediaTek take gaming Android phones. There’s a lot of promise to Dimensity 9300 but the biggest challenge will be how it compares to the performance of Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor which will surely power up the flagship phones from 2024.

Let us know in the comments below if this could potentially be the processor in your next smartphone.
