While we’ve been using large screen laptops for many years now, it was mostly a toss between 15-inches and 17-inches with the former aiming for more portability and the latter for more power.

But as is the case, tech gets better and smaller which has seen the rise of 16-inch laptops that take the form factor of 15-inches but push it further to provide the power of 17-inch laptops. So here we are compiling a list of best 16-inch laptops in 2024 that offer the best blend of portability and performance for power users.

We say power users because for most users, smaller 14-inch or 13-inch laptops offer almost everything as evident in our list of best laptops or best laptops for students or even the best laptops for businesses. These larger 16-inch models are better suited for tasks like video editing, 3D rendering, development or gaming, where a more expansive display can enhance productivity and offer more immersive experiences.

If you’re looking for more affordable models, check out the following guides that take budget into account. Keep in mind that you won’t get the specs you otherwise would in most of the models in our best 16-inch laptops guide.

The biggest reason for choosing a 16-inch laptop is performance; therefore, a robust processor, high-quality graphics card, and ample memory are essential components. Also important is the build quality and screen resolution, as these directly impact the user experience.

On the other hand, some folks just want a larger screen laptop- possibly because of aging eyes and instead of power, they look for the most affordable option. We’ve got an option for that on the list as well. Each model we’ve chosen stands out for its performance, design or price, ensuring you get a reliable and efficient computer for your investment.

MacBook Pro 16” with M3 Max

The MacBook Pro 16” with the M3 Max chip empowers you by its sheer performance capabilities. Compiling code has been a breeze, with the advanced chip easily handling large datasets. The thermal management deserves a nod too, keeping things cool without the constant hum of fans.

The large and brilliant Liquid Retina XDR display with true-to-life colours and deep blacks, making it ideal for photo and video editing tasks. That same display, paired with Spatial Audio speakers, elevates your Netflix or YouTube experience.

Having used the MacBook for a full day’s work and still seeing plenty of battery life left is nothing short of impressive. It’s comforting to know that you can leave your charger behind for a day without fretting about finding a power outlet or expecting reduced performance.

All this power and battery does come at the expense of a hefty laptop- this isn’t the lightest laptop out there, but we think the trade-off for a larger screen and robust performance is worthwhile. Despite its premium price point, the MacBook Pro 16” with M3 Max stands as our top choice for professionals seeking a powerful and reliable workhorse. Gamers need to look elsewhere though.

The display is a true delight with vibrant colours and sharp detail that makes everything from browsing to watching movies excellent. Having said that, the sound doesn’t match the screen experience and you’ll need headphones to truly enjoy movies and TV series.

Our biggest concern lies in the heat management and noisy fan. Although performance under workload is solid, we’re not fans of the heat buildup. Working for extended periods becomes less comfortable, especially on the lap. Plus, the weight of the laptop and the massive size as a tablet make it a bit unweidly in your hands.

Huawei MateBook D 16

  • The numeric keypad is good for productivity
  • Not a wide tange of ports
  • Speakers could be more robust
  • Screen refresh rate is 60Hz

The large screen real estate on the Huaawei MateBook D 16 makes multitasking a breeze, and despite its size, it’s effortless to carry around. The muted silver finish fits into any setting, from corporate boardrooms to cosy coffee shops.

What surprised us most was the endurance of the battery. We breezed through an entire day’s work and still had juice left — great news for those who dread the sight of low battery warnings. Additionally, the numeric keypad is great for users that use Excel or any table based app. Also worth noting is Huawei’s Metaline antenna technology that lets you be wirelessly connected almost 270m away.

The laptop has a few ports but we would have preferred some. You get two USB-A, one USB-C and one HDMI port. An extra USB port would have been a good addition. While the screen is large the 60Hz refresh rate is on the lower side but we do understand that Huawei had to make some tradeoffs to offer the MateBook D 16 at the very affordable price of AED 3,199 making it our budget pick.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus M16

  • Don't expect a stellar batery life
  • Chassis could be a bit more sturdy
Why We Chose This: A gaming laptop that powerful and not crazy-expensive? That's the Asus Zephrus M16 with a new Core i9 CP, RTX GPU and 240Hz display.

Specs wise, you’re getting the latest Intel Core i9 processor with Nvidia RTX 4070 graphics for seamless gameplay — even with the most demanding titles. What’s impressive is that the laptop stays surprisingly cool and quiet, a testament to ASUS’s exceptional thermal management system.

With such powerful specs and a rather this chassis, we weren’t expecting great battery life and you’d be lucky if you can get the claimed 6 hours out of it. With even a little bit of gaming, that figure goes down to half. Even so, the Zephyrus M16 deserves a place in our list for best 16-inch laptops.

Buying Guide

When choosing the best 16-inch laptop for yourself, you should look at several specifications to ensure it meets your performance and usability needs. Here’s what you should focus on:

The CPU should be powerful enough to handle our daily tasks efficiently. The Intel Core i5 or the Apple M2 is good enough for light work, but for creative professionals or gamers, get the highest end available.

For those involved in creative or gaming fields, a dedicated GPU is a must and look for the Nvidia RTX 4060 or higher. MacBook users are good with anything that’s on the M3 Pro or M3 Pro, with the M2 or M3 Max a preferred option.

While 16GB is good for basic use, aim for 32GB for smoother multitasking or 64GB if editing 4K videos.

Always make sure you’re getting a solid-state drive (SSD) for speedy data access with at least 1TB of internal storage. You can always add additional storage externally.

The quality of the screen is paramount for a clear, sharp viewing experience. A minimum of 1920×1080 pixels is recommended for clear visuals, but higher is always better.

Battery life

Gamers will have to sacrifice battery life, but for other use cases, aim for at least an 8-hour battery life. Higher is always better.

Ensure it has sufficient USB, HDMI, and other necessary ports for our peripherals.

Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 are the current standards for wireless connectivity.

Those are some of the options you should always look for and concludes our list of best 16-inch laptops. Hit us up in the comments below if you have any specific questions about either of these models or if you want to know more about one that’s here.
