Supermassive Games, the British studio behind Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology, is laying off up to 75 staff — its third round of job cuts in three years.

The Guildford-based developer announced on X that it is beginning a redundancy consultation process, which it expects to end with the loss of up to 75 roles.

“We have made the difficult decision to begin a redundancy consultation process, which we anticipate will result in the loss of up to 75 of our colleagues. This is a necessary step to help ensure the sustainability of the company. We know this will be an incredibly difficult time for everyone, and our priority throughout the process will be to provide support to all those impacted.”

The statement does not say what sustainability looks like from here, or which teams are affected.

Supermassive cut around 90 roles in early 2024, per Game Developer, and around 36 more in July 2025, when it also delayed sci-fi horror Directive 8020 from October 2025 to May 2026.

Directive 8020 shipped in May to a generally mixed reception, holding a Metacritic score of 72. It was also the first Dark Pictures game the studio published itself; the first four entries in the anthology were handled by Bandai Namco.

The studio has already lost its chief executive. Robert Henrysson, who joined in January 2024, stepped down in June — weeks after Directive 8020’s release — citing a need to “enjoy the summer with my wonderful family”. Until Dawn studio CEO leaves after Directive 8020

How many people will remain is unclear. The consultation is under way, and Supermassive has not said which teams are affected or what the cuts mean for its in-development projects. The company has been wholly owned by Nordisk Games since 2022.

Supermassive says the redundancy consultation is ‘a necessary step to help ensure the sustainability of the company’. In the UK, employers are legally required to consult staff before making 20 or more redundancies within 90 days, so the process is a legal requirement at this scale.
