The opening-day record belongs to Spider-Man
Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned $168 million from 4,487 North American theatres on Friday, giving it the biggest opening day ever for a domestic release. Variety reports that it passed the $157 million opening-day record set by Avengers: Endgame.
The scale becomes even clearer beside the rest of Friday’s chart. The Odyssey placed second with $14.5 million as it entered its third weekend, while Toy Story 5 followed with $1.8 million. Spider-Man did not merely win the day; it turned the chart into supporting cast.
The result also extends an impressive run for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films. Spider-Man: No Way Home earned $260 million during its North American opening weekend, which remains the second-biggest weekend debut listed in the current historical comparison.
The weekend record is still within reach
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has broken the single-day record, but its full opening-weekend position still depends on the final North American total. Sony estimates that the film will reach $325 million by Sunday, while rival projections go as high as $358 million.
Avengers: Endgame currently holds the North American opening-weekend record with $357 million. A $358 million finish would therefore put Brand New Day narrowly ahead, although that figure remains a forecast rather than a completed result.
The comparison is already close enough to make the final count unusually dramatic for people who enjoy box-office records as a spectator sport. Our sister site IGN Middle East has examined the film’s race with Avengers: Endgame as the weekend estimates develop.
No Way Home gave the sequel a powerful launchpad
Brand New Day continues Peter Parker’s story after Spider-Man: No Way Home left the hero without his closest allies. In the previous film, Peter asked Doctor Strange to erase everyone’s memory of him, leaving MJ and Ned unaware of who he is.
Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker, alongside a cast that includes Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Liza Colón-Zayas, and Tramell Tillman. The combination of that cliffhanger and No Way Home’s $260 million North American debut gave Brand New Day substantial franchise momentum before its first Friday was counted.
For UAE audiences, the $168 million result is best read as a measure of the film’s scale within the wider cinema conversation. The record covers North America rather than UAE ticket sales, but it confirms that Brand New Day has become a genuine shared movie event — cape, records, and all.
