Sonos Ace Ultra headphones surface in FCC filing ahead of September launch

Sonos' next over-ear headphones, the Ace Ultra, just surfaced at the FCC in five colours — with a September launch event already confirmed.

Sonos’ next over-ear headphones, the Ace Ultra, have surfaced in an FCC filing a month before the September launch event the company confirmed last week.

What the Sonos Ace Ultra filing shows

The filing, which appeared Monday, is heavily redacted but identifies the product as model S52A. What survives is a list of five colourways: Greige, Shadow Black, Agave, Blush and Sand.

The current Sonos Ace ships only in black and white, so this is the first time the headphones have been allowed to be interesting. Sonos tried the same trick with its portable speaker, which picked up a wider palette last year.

WiFi and a voice assistant

The radio details in the filing suggest the Ace Ultra adds WiFi alongside Bluetooth, with support for Sonos’ own voice assistant, per Lowpass, which first reported the filing. Neither feature is confirmed. WiFi would let the headphones join a Sonos system the way the speakers do, rather than pairing to a phone.

A September launch event

Sonos confirmed the launch window last week. On the company’s third-quarter earnings call, chief executive Tom Conrad said:

In September, we’ll be hosting a product launch event.

Conrad framed the event around the company’s AI push, saying “conversational computing and predictive intelligence are moving into the home.” He has described AI-aided voice control as a central part of Sonos’ strategy; the Ace Ultra’s apparent voice assistant support would be the first headphones-shaped piece of that plan.

Sonos has spent the past year broadening the line — a portable speaker, a pro-audio amp for custom installs, and now, it appears, a flagship headphone refresh.

The Ace launched in June 2024 at US$449 and sells in the UAE from about AED 1,479 on Amazon.ae, where it launched at around AED 2,099. The Ultra should sit above that. Expect it through the same channels — Virgin Megastore and Amazon.ae — after the September event.

When will the Sonos Ace Ultra launch?

Sonos has confirmed a product launch event in September but has not given a date. The FCC filing suggests the Ace Ultra will be part of it.

What is new on the Sonos Ace Ultra?

Per the FCC filing, the Ace Ultra comes in five colourways — Greige, Shadow Black, Agave, Blush and Sand — and appears to add WiFi and Sonos’ voice assistant, both firsts for the headphones.

How much will the Sonos Ace Ultra cost in the UAE?

Pricing is unconfirmed. The current Sonos Ace sells from about AED 1,479 on Amazon.ae, and the Ultra is expected to cost more when it arrives after the September event.
