Outlander star Sam Heughan has dropped what looks like a hint that he’s part of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, though neither he nor Warner Bros. has said so. IGN reports that the actor was asked about Middle-earth at a festival appearance, and his answer left fans reading between the lines.

The exchange happened at Scotland’s Wigtown Book Festival. Winter Is Coming dates the talk to 4 October. When the moderator suggested the Lord of the Rings franchise was “exhausted”, Heughan pushed back and added, “I’m not giving anything away, but I may have been in New Zealand recently.” The Mellon Heads podcast shared the clip on X on 28 October.

New Zealand is where the film is shooting. Andy Serkis directs, and he recently said he can handle Batman Part II and Lord of the Rings in the same year. Heughan could simply have visited the set as a fan, since he has a long Tolkien connection. IGN notes he’s named after Samwise Gamgee and his brother Cirdan after an Elf, and that their parents belonged to a London hippie community called Gandalf’s Garden. At Wigtown, Winter Is Coming says, he joked that he wasn’t named after a Hobbit, despite confirming the Samwise link in earlier interviews.

The auction clue

The quip isn’t the only thing fuelling the theory. Quoting an Outlander fan account, IGN says a rare edition of The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien was auctioned for the ALS Network. The book was signed by “people who have taken his world to the screen, and people who are taking it there next.” According to that account, the signatories include several Hunt for Gollum cast and producers, each listed with their film role, and Heughan’s name is on it too. Winter Is Coming adds that the Heughan rumours have circulated for a while.

If he is in the film, he’d join a cast that keeps growing. Jamie Dornan plays Aragorn (as Strider), and Anya Taylor-Joy has joined as a new elf character. Winter Is Coming also lists Leo Woodall as the original character Halvard. Its writer guesses Heughan would play another ranger, or possibly an Elf, but that’s speculation. No role has been announced.

The film is due in cinemas on 17 December 2027, and we’ve already covered that UAE date. Until Warner Bros. confirms the cast, Heughan’s comment is a tease rather than a casting announcement.

Has Sam Heughan been confirmed for The Hunt for Gollum?

No. Neither Heughan nor Warner Bros. has confirmed a role. He only said he “may have been in New Zealand recently”, and the auction signature list comes via a fan account.
