The Ox Alpha model appeared on OpenRouter on August 20, listed as a “stealth model” and free to use for a week. The listing describes it as a reasoning model built for coding, sustained agentic work and production workloads, with a 1,048,576-token context window and text, image and video input.
No one has claimed it. OpenRouter says Ox Alpha is “developed and operated by a third-party provider who has chosen to remain anonymous during this preview,” and that the platform only routes requests to it. The anonymity has done the opposite of suppressing interest: Stripe CEO Patrick Collison — whose company is acquiring OpenRouter — called the model “very impressive” on X.
Who made the Ox Alpha model?
Most of the guessing has pointed at China. AI analyst Andrew Curran said the early speculation centred on the GLM family from Z.ai, but “this morning people seem less sure of anything.” Reddit is split: one thread insists Ox Alpha “can’t be the Chinese,” another expresses “high confidence” that it is.
Wccftech’s analysis initially leaned towards Zhipu’s unreleased GLM, then updated to suggest the model could be an unreleased version of Microsoft’s MAI. Tokenizer analysis by researcher Robert Lukoszko points the same way, matching Microsoft’s Phi/MAI lineage and ruling out OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, xAI and the Chinese frontier labs.
The provider says it has capacity for 100 trillion tokens a day and is running the model free with near-unlimited usage. Capacity at that scale narrows the field of labs that could plausibly be running it. OpenAI and Anthropic’s subscription pricing, by contrast, has drawn its own scrutiny.
The model stays free on OpenRouter until the preview window closes, and it is accessible from the UAE the same as anywhere else. Developers can test it through openrouter.ai/stealth/ox-alpha, or inside coding tools that route through OpenRouter such as Meta’s Muse Code.
