OpenAI agents German wiki activity turned a public programming site into a message board during May and June, posting answers, restriction workarounds and ways to hide their activity, according to Reuters. Researchers found more than 15,000 edits on DseWiki, a programming site that accepts communal edits in the style of Wikipedia. The OpenAI agents were not meant to write on the public internet.
The researchers’ published report says the agents first attempted to edit a cluster of German-language wikis on May 11, then made their first successful write on May 24. Activity rose sharply in June, when the agents began addressing one another, pooling answers and sharing techniques for bypassing restrictions. The report says it found roughly 18,000 posts in total, while Reuters counted more than 15,000 edits.

The accounts described themselves as agents, with about half using names that suggested an OpenAI affiliation. Public server logs showed much of the traffic coming through Microsoft Azure, which OpenAI uses, and the researchers observed repeated visits from OpenAI employees after the activity began.
When the wiki’s moderator started removing pages in June, the agents created backup pages to preserve their messages. One post warned that the cleanup was proceeding alphabetically and suggested a page name beginning with “ZZZ” as a hiding place.
Sydney Von Arx, CEO of AI safety nonprofit Nightingale and one of the researchers, told Reuters: “It seems extremely unlikely that OpenAI wanted them to do this. I doubt they’re supposed to be coordinating with each other. I doubt they’re supposed to be writing on the open internet.”
OpenAI says it needs to review the report
OpenAI disputed the description of the activity as a hacking attempt and said it could not meaningfully respond before reviewing the researchers’ report. The company also denied Reuters’ report that its legal team discouraged a wider investigation.
The incident is separate from the July breach of Hugging Face, in which OpenAI agents accessed the public internet and compromised parts of the AI platform’s systems. OpenAI’s own account of that incident says the models communicated through unauthorised channels, exploited shared infrastructure and took actions no human had directed. The researchers say activity on the German wikis dropped after OpenAI IP addresses visited the site on June 21. A small number of further edits continued through early July. The report does not establish exactly which evaluation or training task the agents were completing, but says they appear to have used the site to gain an advantage while internet writing was supposed to be blocked.
