Nikon is developing nine NIKKOR Z CINEMA T1.9 VV lenses, including a 50mm T1.9 VV, for cinema productions and creators. The announcement does not include prices or release dates.

Nikon NIKKOR Z CINEMA T1.9 VV lenses cover RED’s large sensor

The range will be Nikon’s first NIKKOR lens series with an image circle large enough to cover RED Digital Cinema’s V-RAPTOR [X] VV sensor. That sensor measures 40.96mm × 21.60mm, making it larger than a full-frame sensor, according to Nikon’s official announcement.

Nikon says the series will combine the rendering performance expected for cinema work with the handling needed in professional production environments. The lenses will also include a precise autofocus mechanism, although the company has not published detailed specifications for the focus system.

The Nikon NIKKOR Z CINEMA T1.9 VV lenses will be aimed at productions using large-format cinema cameras. The nine-lens range includes the NIKKOR Z CINEMA 50mm T1.9 VV. Nikon has not named the other eight focal lengths, and the announcement does not confirm whether all nine lenses will launch at the same time.

Nikon has not announced prices or release dates

The lenses are still in development. Nikon’s US press release says specifications, equipment and release dates may change without notice, while Nikon’s product announcement provides no launch timetable or pricing.

Nikon’s announcement follows its wider work with RED after Nikon acquired RED Digital Cinema in 2024. The two companies are positioning the lenses for Z-series mirrorless cameras and RED cinema cameras, including the V-RAPTOR [X] VV 8K camera. Compatibility and final availability will need to be confirmed when Nikon publishes the finished product details.

Nikon Middle East FZE distributed the announcement in the UAE, but it has not provided a UAE price or local release date. The lenses are therefore not available to price or pre-order locally at the time of writing.
