Nier: Automata’s latest Steam update has pushed the install size the client asks for from roughly 50GB to 366GB, and Square Enix says it’s looking into it. As VGC reports, the patch only adds support for three languages (Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese), so the jump has nothing to do with new content.

The cause looks like a bug in how the DLC is counted. RPG Site reports that every DLC is now listed at 40GB, and its writer verified that the figure isn’t a cosmetic glitch: Steam really does ask for that much space when you try to install. VGC describes it as the full game’s size being added to each add-on, which is how a game of about 50GB adds up to 366GB. Final Weapon adds that the update itself is a download of just 107.7MB, so the inflated number is the space Steam reserves rather than what the patch pulls down.

Square Enix has now acknowledged the problem. According to a machine translation relayed by GoSuGamers, the official Japanese NieR account said in a post on X that it had confirmed an excessive storage requirement appearing during installation of the Steam version after the update. The account said it’s investigating the cause, apologised, and shared a temporary workaround: untick the DLC under Steam’s Properties, then DLC, and download the main game on its own.

The picture isn’t consistent yet. VGC says some players report the issue has cleared on their end, while others still see inflated figures when they install the game or the update. The Steam store page still lists 50GB, so the extra space only shows up once you try to install after buying. GoSuGamers notes that the game is collecting negative Steam reviews from players blocked by the requirement.

For anyone on PC, we recommend holding off on a fresh install until a fix lands, or using the DLC workaround above if you can’t wait. If Nier: Automata is already on your drive, switching off automatic updates for it in Steam stops the patch arriving before the fix does. Swings in install size usually go the other way, as with Marvel Rivals’ file-size cut in Season 9.5 or the Half-Life 2 RTX demo dropping to 50GB, which makes a 316GB increase from a language patch stand out.

Is Nier: Automata actually 366GB now?

That’s what Steam asks for at install on the affected builds, and RPG Site confirmed it isn’t just a display error. The figure looks like the base game’s size counted against each DLC, so the real footprint is likely far smaller, but Square Enix hasn’t published a corrected number yet.

How can I install Nier: Automata without the 366GB requirement?

Square Enix’s Japanese NieR account suggests unticking the DLC under Properties and then DLC in Steam, which lets you download the main game alone. You can add the DLC back once the issue is fixed.

Do the PS4, Xbox One and Switch versions have the same problem?

The reports so far only cover the Steam version. The patch note lists the new languages for Steam, and Final Weapon says it’s unclear when they’ll reach the console versions.
