Windows 11’s 8GB RAM problem has Microsoft promising a fix

Microsoft plans to reduce Windows 11’s memory use on 8GB PCs through the end of 2026. Here is what current owners and laptop buyers should do.

Microsoft has made a welcome promise to people using Windows 11 PCs with 8GB of RAM: the operating system should take less memory for itself. The less welcome part is the timetable. Work will continue through the end of 2026, with improvements expected gradually rather than through one decisive update.

Microsoft’s pledge is a roadmap, not a finished fix

Microsoft says it is targeting “memory optimization for 8GB and above” as part of its Windows 11 quality work through the end of 2026.

Pavan Davuluri, President of Windows and Devices, described the goal as: “Memory optimization for 8GB and above. Reducing Windows memory footprint to deliver a fast and responsive Windows experience across the PCs customers use every day.” The commitment was detailed in Windows Latest’s report on Microsoft’s memory plans.

Translated out of roadmap language: Microsoft wants Windows itself to leave more RAM available for browsers, office software, communication tools, and everything else a PC must run. The company has not specified how much memory it expects to save or what workload will qualify as “fast and responsive”.

The work is expected to reach Windows Insider builds first and mainstream updates gradually.

Eight gigabytes remains usable, but the margin is thin

An 8GB Windows 11 PC can still handle mainstream work, although its limits appear quickly when several demanding applications are open together.

In a practical test, Windows Central found Windows 11 viable on 8GB RAM. Its test machine used about 3.8GB while idle and reached roughly 7.2GB with browser tabs, streaming, and productivity applications running, without an obvious slowdown during typical use.

Those figures capture the compromise neatly. Windows occupied close to half the available memory at idle, while a representative workload left only about 0.8GB of physical RAM unused. The experience remained enjoyable in that test, so a high usage percentage alone does not prove that a PC is unusable. It does show how little room remains when the workload grows.

Microsoft still lists 4GB as the minimum RAM requirement for Windows 11. Its new optimisation target starts at 8GB, while Copilot+ PCs use 16GB as their baseline. The official minimum therefore says whether Windows can run, not whether it will provide comfortable headroom for modern multitasking.

Microsoft has not explained exactly where the savings will come from

Microsoft has committed to lowering Windows 11’s memory footprint without publishing a technical plan for achieving it.

Windows Latest points to WebView2, the Chromium-based engine used by parts of Windows and some applications, as one contributor to memory pressure. Web-based interfaces can create additional browser-style processes, while third-party applications built with Electron or similar wrappers add their own demands. Telemetry, background services, and preloaded features can consume more memory before the user begins working.

That analysis is plausible, but it is broader than Microsoft’s official statement. Microsoft has not publicly identified WebView2, Electron, or any single Windows component as the cause of the problem in this announcement.

Windows 11 is also moving more interfaces towards WinUI, Microsoft’s native interface framework. Windows Latest connects that work with potential memory savings, while also reporting that Microsoft is addressing WinUI’s own performance and RAM issues. Replacing one framework with another only helps if the replacement is demonstrably leaner in the finished build.

Existing 8GB owners do not need to replace a workable laptop

People whose 8GB laptops remain responsive during their normal workload can continue using them while Microsoft’s improvements roll out.

Basic browsing, email, document work, and streaming fit within the workloads that have performed acceptably in independent testing. Owners who encounter slowdowns can reduce pressure by removing unwanted manufacturer software, limiting unnecessary startup applications, and avoiding several memory-heavy applications at once.

That advice has limits. Video editing, large creative projects, heavy multitasking, and dozens of active browser tabs can exhaust 8GB quickly. Windows can rely on storage when physical memory fills, but users may then encounter longer loading times or stutter.

An upgrade to 16GB is worth considering when the laptop supports replaceable or expandable memory and the current workload regularly causes slowdowns. Check the exact model before buying memory, because some laptops integrate RAM into the system and cannot be upgraded after purchase.

New buyers should choose capacity over Microsoft’s promise

For a new Windows 11 laptop, 16GB remains the safer choice when the price and configuration allow it.

An 8GB model can still make sense for light study, browsing, streaming, or secondary-computer duties. It becomes a harder recommendation when the memory is fixed, the laptop is expected to last several years, or the user routinely keeps communication software, many browser tabs, and productivity applications open together.

Microsoft deserves credit for treating memory efficiency as an operating-system responsibility rather than assuming every performance complaint can be answered with more hardware. The commitment still asks buyers to trust future software work without a benchmark, a firm rollout date for each improvement, or a quantified target.

Current owners should wait for the updates unless their machine already fails their workload. New buyers should pay for 16GB where practical, especially when there is no route to upgrade later. A roadmap can improve an 8GB PC; it cannot give the machine another 8GB of physical memory.
