Heat director Michael Mann has been treated at a Los Angeles hospital after a firearm accidentally discharged into his leg at a gun range on Saturday, 31 October. His representative says the injury was superficial and that he’s being released.

In a statement to TMZ, the representative said a weapon “accidentally discharged while holstered”, and that Mann “was treated and is being released.” TMZ, which broke the story, reports that sources say the 83-year-old was trying to holster his weapon during target practice at a sanctioned range at around 4 PM. TMZ describes him as an experienced target shooter of decades.

The location was The Range LA, and TMZ says the LAPD and the Los Angeles Fire Department responded. The police told the outlet it was a training accident, and that Mann had no intention of harming himself. TMZ adds that he was taken to a local hospital by ambulance and that the wound was subcutaneous and minor. IGN also relayed the story. Beyond that, further details haven’t been made public.

What it means for Heat 2

The timing is awkward because Mann is deep into preparing his long-awaited Heat follow-up. According to IGN, Christian Bale confirmed in February that he’d start filming in Chicago soon, and Leonardo DiCaprio joined in July. IGN adds that the pair are reportedly set to play Vincent Hanna and Chris Shiherlis respectively, with filming expected to begin this month. Stephen Graham and Ebon Moss-Bachrach are also expected to appear, and the film can lean on Mann’s novel of the same name.

Neither Mann’s representative nor TMZ has said whether the injury affects that schedule. With the wound described as superficial, there’s no indication so far that it does.

Mann has been in the news for other reasons recently. A new director’s final cut of his 2006 film is out this month, and we covered the Miami Vice director’s final cut premiere when it was announced. We’ll update this story if Mann’s team shares more.

Is Heat 2 delayed?

There’s no official word. IGN reported earlier this year that filming was expected to begin in November, but neither Mann’s representative nor TMZ has addressed the schedule since the incident.
