Marvel’s Wolverine will run at 60 frames per second with ray tracing enabled on a standard PlayStation 5 — and for the first time in an Insomniac game, that mode is the default.
The studio confirmed the details to IGN ahead of the game’s 15 September release. It built Wolverine around the 60fps target rather than adding it late, as it has with past games.
“From early on in development, we knew we wanted to make this 60 FPS, working on the base PS5 in performance mode. And we’ve definitely been able to accomplish that. The game feels super smooth.”
Jess Reiner-Reed, senior project director at Insomniac
Marvel’s Wolverine’s performance mode
Insomniac’s previous Marvel games shipped a 30fps fidelity mode and a 60fps performance mode, with ray tracing bolted on to the performance mode late in development — or patched in after launch, as happened with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Head of technology Mike Fitzgerald says Wolverine was different from the start.
“This is going to be a 60 frames per second game with ray tracing as the PS5 should have. We’re going to build the game around this and towards this. And it’s the default mode for the first time for us in one of our games. It’s important for the presentation.”
Built for Logan’s mess
The change of setting drove the work. Wolverine leaves Spider-Man’s city streets for the Canadian wilderness and the jungles of Madripoor, so Insomniac built foliage tech — the undergrowth reacts to wind, characters and combat. Most props are destructible too, which matters when the player character’s answer to most problems is a set of claws.

“Logan’s a really destructive character… most of the props in the game are destructible, react in physically accurate ways. We invested a ton in that technology. So market stalls and tables and everything around you is splintering and flying off as you’re doing combat.”
Mike Fitzgerald
Marvel’s Wolverine launches 15 September on PlayStation 5, as confirmed earlier this year. It is a linear adventure with a single playable character, unlike the open-world Spider-Man games.

Does Marvel’s Wolverine run at 60fps on the base PS5?
Yes. Insomniac says performance mode runs at 60 frames per second with ray tracing on a standard PS5, and that mode is the default — a first for the studio.
Is there a 30fps fidelity mode in Marvel’s Wolverine?
Insomniac has not detailed a separate fidelity mode for Wolverine. The studio’s previous Marvel games shipped one; this time the 60fps ray-traced mode is the default, so most players will not need to switch modes.
Is Marvel’s Wolverine open world like Spider-Man?
No. Wolverine is a linear action-adventure with a single playable character, Logan, in an original story set before the X-Men exist. Insomniac confirmed the linear structure earlier this year.
