Marvel Revives Nova as a Film, and Puts Its Busiest Writer in Charge

Marvel Studios is developing a Nova film with Loki writer Michael Waldron set to write and potentially direct. Here's how it fits the post–Secret Wars MCU.

What has Marvel actually confirmed about the Nova movie?

Marvel Studios is developing a Nova feature film, with Michael Waldron set to write and potentially direct, as first reported by Deadline and summarised across genre coverage. Beyond that, there is very little on the table. The project is in early development, and there is no title, no cast, no plot synopsis and no release date. Marvel and Waldron’s representatives have not commented, which tells you how quiet and early-stage this is.

What makes it notable is who is attached. Waldron created and showran Loki for Disney+ and wrote Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and he is the writer of the next mainline Avengers films leading into Secret Wars. Handing Nova to the person shaping the climax of this MCU era is a clear signal that Marvel sees the character as part of what comes next rather than a one-off experiment.

Why is Marvel making Nova now?

Marvel has wanted Nova on screen for well over a decade, and this film is the latest attempt to finally get him there. The character was originally planned to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy before being cut from the script, and Kevin Feige has periodically expressed interest in adapting him since. More recently, Moon Knight writer Sabir Pirzada was developing a Nova series, likely for Disney+, before that project was put on the backburner last year as part of Marvel’s broader pullback on streaming output. Coverage of the shift from series to film frames the movie as a deliberate reformatting rather than a fresh idea.

The timing lines up with a gap Marvel needs to fill. With James Gunn now at DC and the original Guardians of the Galaxy team effectively winding down, the MCU’s cosmic side is short a lead. Nova is an obvious candidate to carry space-based stories, and the fact that the Nova Corps already appeared in Guardians gives audiences a ready-made anchor point.

Who is Nova, and where does he fit in the post–Secret Wars MCU?

Nova is a Green Lantern–esque cosmic hero who works with the Nova Corps, a galactic peacekeeping force powered by a cosmic energy known as the Nova Force. That energy grants flight, super-strength, durability and energy projection, making Nova a frontline defender against high-level threats. It is the kind of role the MCU has been missing since the Guardians began their exit.

The likeliest entry point is after Avengers: Secret Wars, which is set to release next year. Marvel has not confirmed this, and it remains informed speculation rather than a stated plan, but a multiverse-shattering crossover is exactly the sort of event that could reset the board and open room for new leads. Reporting placing Nova in that post–Secret Wars window leans on the same logic. For UAE fans who have followed the MCU through cinemas and Disney+, Nova reads as an answer to the question of what the franchise looks like once Doctor Doom’s rampage clears.

The caveat is Marvel’s own track record. Introducing new characters after Endgame has been a mixed affair, and a cosmic hero with no built-in nostalgia is a genuine risk. Nova has enormous potential and, in Waldron, a writer who understands this corner of the MCU. Whether audiences turn up for him is the part no development report can promise. Marvel is also busy stacking new bets elsewhere, from the villain-shaped tease at the heart of Spider-Man: Brand New Day to fresh corners of its roster.
