Why is Logitech not prioritising another handheld?
Logitech says scale and content ownership make another gaming handheld a difficult strategic fit. “Right now, in this moment in time, there’s bigger things for us to focus on than doing a second G Cloud,” Piispanen said.
Asked about making a more conventional PC-like handheld, Piispanen said the category was not a priority but left open the possibility of revisiting it. He argued that handheld hardware works at significant scale and pointed to Nintendo and Steam as ecosystems with control over content.
“So the question is then, should I get into content? Look at Nintendo, they own the content. Look at Steam,” he said. For Logitech, moving beyond peripherals and a cloud-focused device into a content-backed platform would require a substantially broader strategy.
What happened with the original Logitech G Cloud?
The G Cloud attracted a committed niche, but Piispanen says most buyers did not continue using it. He described part of its audience as “super dedicated”, while estimating that “the bigger portion, call it the 80%, bought it, tried it, and then it ended up in a drawer”.
That figure is an anecdotal estimate from Logitech’s gaming chief rather than independently verified usage data. Logitech has not disclosed unit sales, revenue, or retention figures for the handheld.
Launched in 2022, the G Cloud was a cloud-first Android handheld designed around Xbox Cloud Gaming, Nvidia GeForce Now, and remote play from consoles or PCs. Its US launch price was $349.99 (approximately AED 1,284), and PCMag’s G Cloud review rated it 3/5 and called it “overpriced for what it delivers”.
Piispanen said Logitech believed in the product, but its intended use case did not materialise for much of the audience. His comments provide a clearer explanation for the lack of a follow-up than the company had previously offered.
Is Logitech permanently leaving gaming handhelds?
Piispanen did not completely rule out another handheld, but neither a second G Cloud nor a PC-like alternative is currently planned.
The comments also stop short of establishing a wider corporate policy. Logitech has issued no formal announcement declaring that it is leaving the category, and the company never promised that G Cloud would become a multi-generation product line.
