Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos says the KPop Demon Hunters 2 theatrical release will be “very broad” and global. The plan differs from the original, which debuted directly on Netflix.

Sarandos made the announcement at Bloomberg Screentime while describing how Netflix will handle films differently by audience. The KPop Demon Hunters 2 theatrical plan puts the family franchise in the company’s cinema-release strategy.

KPop Demon Hunters 2 theatrical release: what Sarandos said

“When the ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’ sequel comes, you can expect a very broad theatrical release.”

Ted Sarandos, Netflix co-CEO, at Bloomberg Screentime

Deadline reported that Sarandos described the plan as “big, broad, global”. TheWrap also reported that the sequel will receive a broad cinema release. Neither outlet reported a date, list of territories or the length of its theatrical window.

Is a 2029 release date confirmed?

Netflix confirmed Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will return to direct, but its official announcement set no date. Deadline reported a 2029 target; The Hollywood Reporter later said no date had been set and 2029 was unlikely. The year remains unconfirmed.

Why Netflix is taking the sequel to cinemas

Sarandos contrasted art-house films with “four-quad family rewatch” titles such as KPop Demon Hunters. Netflix also plans wide 2027 cinema releases for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew and Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory. Deadline reported planned theatrical windows of 50 and 47 days for those films; Sarandos did not say the sequel would get the same arrangement.

Brad Bird’s Ray Gunn is due in select cinemas before Netflix, another example of the streamer placing some films in cinemas first. No comparable timetable has been announced for the KPop sequel.

What the first film showed in cinemas

After debuting on Netflix, the original drew fans to a two-day US sing-along event. It opened at No. 1 with $19.2 million from 1,700 theatres, The Numbers reports. Deadline says the film reached 325.1 million views in its first 90 days and stayed in Netflix’s Global Top 10 for 63 consecutive weeks.

The event shows demand for a shared screening, not how a multi-week release would perform. Sarandos did not name UAE cinemas or a regional date. Our KPop Demon Hunters Netflix UAE report covers the original’s local streaming run.

Will it stream on Netflix after its cinema run?

Netflix has not announced a post-theatrical streaming date or window.

Does “very broad” mean a 45-day cinema window?

No. Sarandos gave no duration; Narnia’s and Charlie’s announced windows do not apply to this sequel.
