Kane Parsons’ second visit to Valve has revived Portal movie rumours, but there is still no announcement that the filmmaker is attached to the long-delayed adaptation.
The Backrooms director shared a video from inside Valve’s offices on Instagram Stories on 16 September, according to IGN. Parsons also visited the company in June, and his repeated interest in Portal has prompted fans to wonder whether the visits involve more than a tour.

Parsons has called making a Portal film a dream project and told The New York Times that the game was one of the biggest influences on his work. Portal’s sterile test chambers and impossible spaces also sit close to the visual ideas that made his Backrooms videos popular.
The visits do not confirm a film, a deal or even a meeting about Portal. They show only that Parsons has been to Valve’s offices more than once, while fans have connected those visits to his public comments about the game.
That speculation arrives after Backrooms became a major box-office success. The A24 film made roughly $393 million worldwide against a reported $10 million budget, giving Parsons considerably more leverage than he had when the Portal conversation was limited to interviews and fan projects. What happened to the earlier Portal adaptation?
J.J. Abrams and Valve announced plans to work on Portal and Half-Life films in 2013. Abrams said in 2021 that a Portal script was being written at Warner Bros. and that the project was “finally on the rails”, but there has been no comparable public update since.
IGN’s latest report does not say that the Abrams project has been cancelled, replaced or joined by Parsons. It also does not say that Valve has hired Parsons. For now, the idea of a new Portal film is based on a director’s interest, two office visits and fan speculation — not a production announcement.
A Parsons-led adaptation would at least have a clear creative connection. His work on Backrooms deals in large, unsettling spaces and rules that are only partly understood, while Portal already has the testing chambers, GLaDOS and a puzzle structure built for film. Whether Valve wants that combination is still unknown.
