Warner Bros. has parked The Jetsons beyond 2027
Warner Bros. confirmed Carrey’s involvement through a shareholder letter and placed the live-action film in the “beyond 2027” portion of its slate. Our sister site IGN Middle East also reported the studio’s confirmation.
The announcement moves the project beyond the rumours that emerged in October 2025, when Carrey was said to be in talks to lead the adaptation. It also gives this particularly stubborn Hollywood reboot its strongest sign of life in years, although the flying cars should probably remain in the garage for now.
Warner Bros. has not given the film a release date or announced when production will begin. Its placement beyond 2027 leaves plenty of room for development, casting, and the sizeable effects work that a live-action version of The Jetsons is likely to involve.
Carrey’s role and the director remain unconfirmed
Warner Bros. has confirmed Carrey as the star without identifying his character or naming a director. George Jetson is the obvious role people will imagine, but the studio has not made that assignment official.
Earlier reports discussed Jurassic World: Dominion director Colin Trevorrow as a possible director and co-writer, alongside Joe Epstein. The current confirmation does not establish that either remains attached, so Carrey is the only major creative name locked in publicly.
The film would mark Carrey’s first non-Sonic the Hedgehog movie in over a decade. His last cited live-action film outside that series was the 2016 murder mystery Dark Crimes, while he is also set to reprise Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 in 2027.
Carrey previously considered retiring after Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and kept a relatively low profile before returning for the third film. A starring role in The Jetsons suggests his retirement plans have become considerably more flexible — especially when there is a futuristic patriarch waiting to be cast.
The Jetsons has been stuck in Hollywood traffic for years
The Jetsons has gone through numerous attempted revivals without producing a new feature film. A live-action project planned in the early 2000s failed to advance, while later ideas included an animated movie and a live-action sitcom produced by Robert Zemeckis.
Warner Bros. also held preliminary discussions with the rapper formerly known as Kanye West about the property. That remains one of the stranger stops on the project’s development timeline, even by the standards of a cartoon about commuting to work in a flying saucer.
The original Hanna-Barbera series aired in 1962 and returned with additional episodes during the 1980s. It follows George and Jane Jetson, their children, and their robot maid in a future filled with flying cars and domestic technology.
Carrey’s attachment gives the latest adaptation a recognisable star and a performer whose elastic physical comedy fits the material rather neatly. The shareholder letter confirms that the film exists within Warner Bros.’ plans; casting, production, and release details will determine whether this attempt finally reaches the screen.
