Jeffrey Archer has died aged 86, his publisher HarperCollins said on Monday, 5 October 2026. The best-selling British novelist and former Conservative politician died at home; HarperCollins said he died suddenly and peacefully between writing sessions. His final novel, Adam & Eve, was due to be published on Tuesday, 6 October, one day after his death, according to BBC News and Reuters via Nikkei Asia.
HarperCollins told the BBC that Archer had signed copies of the novel with broadcaster Gyles Brandreth at London’s Leicester Square Theatre on Sunday. He was also due to discuss the book at Cheltenham later in the week.
Jeffrey Archer’s books sold more than 300 million copies
Archer’s writing career began with Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less in 1976. His 1979 novel Kane & Abel became one of his best-known books. HarperCollins says his work has sold more than 300 million copies, with novels including The Clifton Chronicles and the William Warwick series, alongside short stories, plays, children’s books and non-fiction.
The publisher’s biography says Archer was the only author to top bestseller lists in fiction, short stories and non-fiction. The BBC reported that he often set his novels in and around Wellington, Somerset, after moving there with his family as a child. He was born in north London on 15 April 1940.
He served in Parliament and the House of Lords
Archer was elected Conservative MP for Louth in 1969, aged 29, and remained in the Commons until 1974. He later became deputy chairman of the Conservative Party under Margaret Thatcher in the mid-1980s. The UK Parliament’s record lists his Commons service from 4 December 1969 to 10 October 1974 and his membership of the Lords from 1992 until his retirement in 2024.

A libel case led to a four-year prison sentence
In 1987, Archer sued the Daily Star over a report alleging that he had paid a woman for sex. He won £500,000 in damages. More than a decade later, the case returned to court after allegations that Archer had lied in the libel proceedings. In 2001, he was convicted of perjury and perverting the course of justice and sentenced to four years in prison, Reuters reported.
Archer served two years and was released in 2003. He later remained a member of the House of Lords until retiring in 2024, according to Parliament’s record. His prison diaries became a distinct part of a wider catalogue that included fiction and non-fiction.
His last novel was due out the day after his death
Adam & Eve was billed as Archer’s final novel after five decades of writing. The official book page describes it as a story about two children born on Armistice Day in 1918: a shepherd’s son and an earl’s daughter. Its plot follows them towards September 1940 and the question of whether Hitler’s plans for Operation Sea Lion could have changed the course of the Second World War.
Archer and his wife Mary celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2026, HarperCollins told the BBC. They had two sons and five grandchildren. Kate Elton, HarperCollins UK chief executive and Archer’s editor, described working with him as one of the great privileges of her publishing life.
