Hideo Kojima has pledged to keep making games on his 63rd birthday, a milestone that also marks 40 years in the industry and a decade since he founded Kojima Productions.

The director, best known for Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding, shared the reflection today in a post on X:

“I turned 63. As I get older, the things I ‘have to do’ and the things I ‘want to do’ continue to increase.

“At the same time, the time I ‘have to do them’ continues to decrease. I constantly need to reassess how I use my time and how I live my life. That said, once you’ve taken something on, you can’t simply put it down and walk away.”

Hideo Kojima’s birthday doubles as an anniversary

The birthday lands on Kojima’s 40th anniversary in the industry, per Video Games Chronicle. His first game, Metal Gear, arrived on the MSX2 in 1987. A decade ago this year, after leaving Konami, he founded Kojima Productions as an independent studio.

Kojima’s work on Death Stranding and its parade of Hollywood talent brought him a new kind of prominence, and the question of whether he would eventually shift to film or TV has been a running theme. He has previously said he does not think AI will produce art in his lifetime.

He addressed it directly:

“While I continue to receive various opportunities and offers, I would like to remain focused on creating games.”

What’s next from Kojima Productions

Kojima’s next game is OD, the horror title published by Microsoft Game Studios and made with Jordan Peele, featuring Hunter Schafer, Udo Kier and Sophia Lillis. tbreak has covered OD’s secret system for scared players.
