HBO has cast Lenny Rush as Dobby, Billy Barratt as young Tom Riddle and Bonnie Hill as Ginny Weasley for season two of its Harry Potter series. The new Harry Potter casting adds three familiar characters to the television adaptation, which is moving into Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Rush, 17, will play Dobby the house-elf. The films used computer-generated imagery and Toby Jones’ voice for the character, so HBO has not said whether Rush will perform the role through motion capture, prosthetics or another method. Deadline’s casting report identifies Rush’s previous work in Am I Being Unreasonable? and confirms the role.
Harry Potter casting brings Tom Riddle back to Hogwarts
Barratt, 18, will play Tom Riddle, the teenage version of Lord Voldemort who appears through the diary at the centre of Chamber of Secrets. Christian Coulson played the character in the 2002 film at 23; HBO’s casting puts a performer closer to the age described in the book.
Hill will take over as Ginny Weasley after Gracie Cochrane, who played the character in season one, confirmed that she would not return. Ginny becomes more central in the second story after finding and writing in Tom Riddle’s diary.
The new season also includes Kit Harington as Gilderoy Lockhart, following his casting in the role. The earlier HBO Harry Potter trailer introduced the first season cast and Hogwarts setting. Production is scheduled to begin this autumn, while the first season is due to start at Christmas and continue into early 2027. HBO has not committed to an annual release schedule, because even wizarding schools apparently need administrative planning.
