The following news story contains mild spoilers for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Insomniac Games, the developers behind the recently released (and highly acclaimed) Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, has confirmed that Miles Morales, the other Spider-Man, is now the main lead of the series.

If you have already completed Spider-Man 2, you will know that Pete basically passes the torch to Miles as he decides to take a break and work on his relationship with MJ.

In an interview with Gizmodo, when asked if that was indeed the case from now on, Insomniac advanced writer Brittney Morris said, “It always felt very natural, and I think we all collectively thought it would happen. To me, it shows a great deal of evolution from Miles; at the beginning of the game, we see him struggling to figure out what he wants to do with his life. By the end, we had Miles carrying the burden of saving the city, and also carry Pete when Pete wasn’t strong enough to carry himself at various points.”

“That’s what’s been so cool about writing a story about two Spider-Men: they’re both strong, and one of them can be strong when the other is not,” he continued. “By the end, Miles is more confident and he’s like, ‘Yeah, I got this. How much worse can things get after what we just went through?'”

While it makes sense to go with Miles Morales after what happened in the sequel, it will be interesting to see just how Insomniac goes about doing it. The most obvious answer would be to kill off Peter Parker, because Pete cannot just “retire” and sit back if the city is under threat (which seems like a definite possibility after how Spider-Man 2 ended). The developers could also relocate Pete to another city or country, but that seems like a cop-out and a missed opportunity to deliver a gut punch that fans had anticipated for the sequel but didn’t materialize.

Regardless of what way Insomniac decides to go, we have quite a few years from now to wait and see what happens. Currently, Insomniac is busy preparing for Wolverine, which is rumoured to release sometime next year. They also said they are willing to look into a Venom spin-off if fans want one, as well as something with Daredevil that they have been hinting at in Spider-Man 2.

Marvel’s Spider-Man was released on October 20, 2023, for the PS5 and has become the fastest-selling PlayStation Game, beating the likes of God of War: Ragnarok by selling more than 2.4 million copies in the first 24 hours since launch.
