While the game doesn’t seem to reinvent the ARPG genre it helped pioneer almost thirty years ago, its tweaks and improvements add a lot to keep things fresh. The critics praised the game’s combat mechanics, extensive build options, great visuals, and endgame activities. However, its weak story and occasional bugs do put a slight damper on things. Regardless, if you want to revisit Hell one more time, Diablo’s latest entry seems like it would scratch that itch just fine.
Diablo 4 Review Roundup
Here are some reviews and first-look articles for Diablo 4 from around the web. At the time of publishing this article, the score for this game was 89 at Opencritic and 88 at Metacritic
IGN
Diablo 4 is a stunning sequel with near perfect endgame and progression design that makes it absolutely excruciating to put down. The story is a pretty big disappointment despite still being a noticeable improvement over Diablo 3 and there are some annoying bugs that need squashing, but the combat, the loot game, and both the sights and sounds of this world are impressive enough to smooth over those rough edges.

Diablo IV, at this time, cannot escape comparison to the past of the franchise it belongs to, but it’s thankfully a game that has been crafted with a strong awareness of what made each one either revered or reviled. It represents a measured approach to combining the many elements from previous entries that worked into a system that feels like the new standard-bearer for action role-playing.

GamesRadar+
Diablo 4 is a diabolical assault on the senses. Sharp refinements to combat, gear, and loot systems make this one of the best action-RPGs in years, and the expressive open world shows there’s still room for Blizzard to expand on the core Diablo concept.
GamesRadar+ rating: 5/5
PlayStation Universe
Diablo IV takes the series to new heights, but also spends plenty of time covering familar ground. The compelling rush for loot is as strong as it has ever been, and visually, the game is spectacular. It doesn’t exactly feel like a massive leap from Diablo III yet its focus on the series’ core strengths ensures that’s likely more than enough for long-time fans.
PlayStation Universe rating: 8/10

Shacknews
There’s a reason “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” became an adage. Diablo 4 plays brilliantly, and I opted for familiar builds for a reason – they’re fun and effective. That said, I would like to see something more daring in the future, whether that’s a class with a distinct defensive or support role or even just another offense-oriented class that isn’t a corpse-exploding necromancer or whirling barbarian again.
Shacknews rating: 8/10
PushSquare
Diablo 4 is the true successor to the bad old days of action RPGs and oozes quality in its frenetic combat and deep, engaging character development. It tells a complex, gritty narrative set in the darkly beautiful world of Sanctuary. Even better, it provides a solid foundation for years of Diablo content to come.
PushSquare rating: 9/10
Twinfinite
I cannot overstate just how satisfying it is to play Diablo IV on a moment-to-moment basis, and with so much replay value to be had from its various classes and build possibilities within those classes, Diablo IV feels like a true return to form for the series.
