In a showcase of pure skill and determination, Jordan’s Amjad ‘AngryBird’ Al-Shalabi became the first Arab player in the world to win the Street Fighter World Champion at Evo 2023.

The Evolution Championship Series (Evo) kicked off its 2023 event in Las Vegas, USA, on Friday, with more than 9,000 competitors from across the world vying for the top prize.

Al-Shalabi, who is part of the Abu Dhabi team Nasr Esports, reached the finals after beating some of the best fighting players in the world. In the finals, he faced Saul ‘MenaRD’ Leonardo from the Dominican Republic, and after four rounds using his main character Ken, Al-Shalabi was able to win the match with a score of three sets to one.

After winning the match, Al-Shalabi took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to celebrate the historic moment with his followers. He tweeted, “I have been chasing this for so long, and it finally happened. Do your best and the result is on Allah.”

Al-Shalabi joined the Nasr Esports team in 2017 and quickly rose to prominence with his display of skill and talent. He and his teammate Adel Anouche are known in the fighting game circles as “The Birds”.
