Mozilla is expanding Firefox Smart Window, its opt-in AI browsing mode, with cited web answers, automatic tab grouping and visual previews of browsing history.
Smart Window now pulls current web information into chat responses through a new partnership with Exa, showing the sources behind each answer instead of sending you to a separate search page. A demo shown to The Verge had it sorting through browsing history to surface “running shoes I looked at last week,” complete with images pulled from the sites visited.

It can also suggest groups for related open tabs, spot duplicates and close them with a click, and show visual previews of pages from your history when you search using natural language. The full details are in the Mozilla announcement.
“The browser already has much of the context around what you’re trying to do — the research in your tabs, the pages you’ve visited, the things you’ve found along the way. With Smart Window, we’re exploring how to make more of that context useful while keeping you in control.”
Ajit Varma, head of Firefox
What’s new in Firefox Smart Window
Smart Window is Firefox’s privacy-first, AI-powered browsing mode, still in beta. It grew out of the “AI Window” concept Mozilla showed last November, and remains entirely optional: you choose when to use it, what browsing context it can see, and which AI model handles your questions, with Firefox’s AI Controls providing one place to switch it off.
Beta feedback shaped the update, per Mozilla. One user described using Smart Window to hold their “train of thought”; another used it to find a page they had seen before without remembering where.
What’s next
Mozilla says Smart Window will soon surface recent browsing journeys, pulling together related tabs and history as a starting point, and use relevant information to fill out online forms. There is no date yet for leaving beta, according to Mozilla’s head of Firefox, Ajit Varma.
Smart Window is currently available in English in the US and Canada only, so UAE users are still waiting — you can sign up at firefox.com/smart-window to be notified when it arrives. Mozilla’s Firefox AI work has been in the news this year: tbreak covered the study that found AI outpacing human security teams at finding Firefox bugs.
