EA has released 25 classic PC games on Steam, GOG and the EA App, and seven of them are rebuilt “Anniversary Editions” with cinematics recovered from the publisher’s own tape archive. The line-up covers Road Rash, six Wing Commander titles, the Ultima series, both Crusader games and Theme Hospital. According to VGC, the games went live on 5 November as part of EA’s Restored Classic Sale.

EA said on X that seven restored Anniversary Editions for Road Rash and Wing Commander, plus 18 other classics, are live on Steam, GOG and the EA App.

What “restored” means here

The seven restorations are Road Rash: 30th Anniversary Edition, Wing Commander and Wing Commander II (both 35th Anniversary Editions), and Wing Commander III, IV, Prophecy and Privateer 2: The Darkening (all 30th Anniversary Editions). In its announcement, EA says Senior Producer Jim Vessella found a physical media vault at its Redwood Shores campus in March 2022, holding nearly 20,000 archival assets such as Betacam, VHS and D1 tapes. By April 2026 the team had digitised 6,000 of them, and the master tapes for Wing Commander and Road Rash turned up among the footage. RPG Site reports that this digitisation process restored the cinematic scenes, and Gamewatcher puts the figure at 1,500 recovered cinematics.

Each edition keeps the original look and design, according to EA, with updates for modern systems, controls and performance. The AI-upscaled video is optional: players can also choose the master-source footage or the original 1990s videos. For Wing Commander IV, EA also rebalanced the enemy missile spam that the game is known for, and the original behaviour is included for anyone who prefers it.

Built with modders

Much of the technical work came from the fan community. EA says the Wing Commander improvements were possible because community members collaborated with its team to fold their mods into the official releases. The announcement credits modder Matt Wells for the enhancement patches behind the later games, which add 60 FPS gameplay and an input calibration tool. It also credits Lance Burns, James Touton and Pat Caron for the two older games, and director Steve Hilliker for the Privateer 2 cinematics, which he had kept on tapes in his attic.

For existing fans, the practical benefit is the upgrade path. Anyone who already owns a digital copy of the Wing Commander titles on GOG or the EA App receives the Anniversary Edition upgrade for free on that platform. Gamereactor notes the offer covers the Wing Commander restorations only, not the other franchises in the batch. Gamereactor also reports that Road Rash ships with its full 14-track soundtrack, including Soundgarden, after a 12-month licensing effort.

Prices and the rest of the catalogue

The Anniversary Editions of Road Rash and Wing Commander are priced at USD 9.99 SRP each, and the other classics at USD 4.99 SRP each. That second group of 18 includes Wing Commander: Privateer, Academy and Armada, Strike Commander, Theme Hospital, both Crusader games, nine mainline Ultima games and the two Ultima Underworld titles. RPG Site says the Ultima games have been on GOG before, but this is the first time the series has appeared on Steam.

The discounts are where sources differ. VGC reports that the Ultima and Wing Commander games can also be bought in bundles at 55% off, and that every title is 50% off until 19 November. EA’s release text, as reproduced by RPG Site, gives the special pricing on Steam and GOG as 5-9 November. We recommend checking the store page before you buy. We found no UAE pricing or regional availability details in EA’s announcement.

A rare good-news week for EA

VGC calls this “a rare bit of positive news” from EA, a publisher fans have long accused of leaving its older games untouched. It also says the goodwill is unlikely to ease the backlash over BioWare’s closure, with the campaign to save Mass Effect still dominating replies to EA’s posts. EA isn’t alone in digging through its back catalogue, either: Sega recently launched Sega Universe to revive classic IP beyond games.

Do I get the Wing Commander Anniversary Editions free if I already own the old versions?

EA says owners of the digital Wing Commander titles on GOG or the EA App get the Anniversary Edition upgrade automatically on the same platform. Steam is a new storefront for these games, and EA’s offer doesn’t extend to the other franchises in the batch.

Are the restored cinematics AI-upscaled?

EA says it ran an AI upscaling pass as an optional enhancement on the 30th Anniversary Editions. You can still play with the master-source footage or the original 1990s videos instead.

How much do the games cost and where can I buy them?

They’re on Steam, GOG and the EA App. The Anniversary Editions list at USD 9.99 SRP and the other 18 games at USD 4.99 SRP, with 50% off on Steam and GOG for a limited time. VGC gives 19 November as the end date, so check the store page for the exact cut-off.
