Doom: The Dark Ages is receiving support for the upgraded version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on PS5 Pro as part of the game’s upcoming Update 4.
The free update will arrive on July 7 alongside Doom: The Dark Ages Revelations, giving PS5 Pro players access to improved image reconstruction designed to produce a sharper and more stable presentation.
Unlike traditional resolution scaling, PSSR uses machine learning alongside information such as motion, depth, exposure and sub-pixel samples to reconstruct a higher-quality image from the frames rendered by the game.
According to id Software, the improvements should be particularly noticeable when teh Doom Slayer is moving quickly through combat arenas filled with enemies, particles and environmental details.
Upgraded PSSR targets visual stability during combat
Doom: The Dark Ages contains plenty of fine visual details that can be challenging for image reconstruction techniques, including chains, sparks, snow patterns, broken stone, thin weapon geometry and distant enemies.
The upgraded PSSR implementation is intended to keep those details more coherent between frames, reducing the shimmering and visual noise that can appear when small objects move across the screen.
Distant enemies and environmental edges should remain easier to identify in wider arenas, while weapons and character models are expected to appear more resolved during close-up sequences. Effects-heavy encounters should also look cleaner, as the improved reconstruction preserves more of the underlying image.
The update will continue to work alongside the dynamic resolution and temporal data used by id Software’s idTech8 engine. The studio says this allows the game to maintain the responsive controls, high frame rates and large combat spaces expected from the series while delivering a cleaner final image.
Sony introduced the upgraded version of PSSR earlier in 2026. The technology was developed through the company’s Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD and uses a revised neural network and reconstruction algorithm.
Doom: The Dark Ages Update 4 arrives July 7
Update 4 will be available for free when Doom: The Dark Ages | Revelations launches on July 7. The upgraded PSSR support will only be available on PS5 Pro.
Revelations is a new campaign expansion featuring additional levels, demons and the Chain Spear weapon. It requires the base game and is separate from the free Update 4 improvements.
A free Ripatorium 3.0 update is also scheduled for July 7, adding more customization options and personal presets to the game’s arena challenge mode. Revelations owners will receive three additional maps, new demons and fully upgraded weapons for the mode after completing the expansion’s story.
