Destiny 2 Hits Its Highest Steam Player Count in Two Years After Final Update

The release of Monument of Triumph has brought more than 167,000 players back to Destiny 2 on Steam, nearly doubling Marathon’s all-time peak.

Destiny 2 Hits Its Highest Steam Player Count in Two Years After Final Update

Destiny 2 has recorded its highest Steam player count in two years following the release of its final live-service update, Monument of Triumph.

According to SteamDB, Bungie's long-running looter shooter reached a 24-hour peak of 167,867 concurrent players on Steam after the update launched on June 9, 2026. That is the game's highest figure since the release of Episode: Echoes in June 2024.

The surge has also pushed Destiny 2 comfortably past Marathon, Bungie's recently released extraction shooter. Marathon reached an all-time peak of 88,337 concurrent players on Steam shortly after its March 2026 launch.

Destiny 2 Players Return for Monument of Triumph

The jump in player numbers follows the release of Monument of Triumph, the final live-service content update for Destiny 2. Bungie announced in May that it was ending active development on the game as the studio shifted its focus towards incubating new projects.

However, the studio confirmed that Destiny 2 will remain playable indefinitely, much like the original Destiny. Monument of Triumph is designed as a permanent send-off and a celebration of the game’s nearly nine-year lifespan.

The free update adds a new progression system built around Legendary Marks, which can be earned by completing Triumphs across the game. Players can exchange the currency for armour ornaments, accessories, weapon engrams and other rewards.

It also introduces permanent versions of Pantheon and Sparrow Racing League, alongside updated activities, refreshed rewards and several quality-of-life improvements intended to make the game more welcoming for returning players.

Destiny 2 Nearly Doubles Marathon’s All-Time Steam Peak

The comparison with Marathon is particularly notable given Bungie’s current direction. The studio launched Marathon in March 2026 and recently ran an Open Play Week between June 2 and June 9 to encourage new and returning players to try the game’s second season.

The free-play event included access to the Night Marsh zone, a new Runner shell, additional gear and an experimental PvP-lite mode called Sponsored Survival.

Despite the renewed push for Marathon, its all-time Steam peak remains significantly below the number of players who returned to Destiny 2 for its final major update.

The Steam numbers do not represent the complete audience for either title, as both games are also available on consoles. However, the figures offer a clear indication of the continued interest in the Destiny franchise as Bungie prepares to close this chapter of the series.
