Is there going to be a Dungeons & Dragons sequel?
A Dungeons & Dragons sequel script exists, but the film has yet to receive a public greenlight. Goldstein disclosed the script while speaking with ScreenRant at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, adding that he did not know whether it would reach the screen.
As our sister site IGN Middle East’s report on Goldstein’s sequel comments details, he said the writers had been hired to develop it and believed fans would enjoy what they wrote. He also expressed enthusiasm about working with the original cast again.
The update establishes that development progressed beyond hopeful cast interviews and general studio interest. It does not establish that Paramount has approved a production schedule, committed a budget, or made a final decision about the project.
Why could financial reasons prevent the sequel?
The first film’s production cost and box-office performance make another expensive fantasy adventure difficult to justify. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves earned $205.46 million worldwide, while its reported production budget was $150 million before marketing costs were included.
Those numbers do not provide a complete profit calculation, and Paramount has not publicly broken down the film’s profitability. They do, however, give context to Goldstein’s warning that these films are expensive to make. A studio looking at a sequel would need to weigh the cost of recreating the film’s effects-heavy fantasy world against the commercial reach demonstrated by the original.
Former Paramount Pictures CEO Brian Robbins had already attached a similar condition to the idea of another film. He said he would be interested in a sequel if it could be made for less, suggesting that budget control was part of the conversation well before Goldstein revealed the completed script.
Could Paramount revive the sequel later?
Paramount could still revive the sequel, but there is no announced plan to do so. Goldstein described financial concerns rather than a lack of ideas, while the existence of a commissioned script gives the studio material it could revisit if the budget or wider strategy changes.
The first film also has a stronger reception story than its box office alone suggests. Its Rotten Tomatoes scores cited in the source stand at 91% from critics and 92% from audiences, while IGN awarded it 7/10 and praised its accessible approach to D&D culture.
Chris Pine previously said he was confident a sequel would eventually happen, but that optimism was never accompanied by an official greenlight. For now, Honor Among Thieves has achieved the peculiarly Hollywood status of having a finished follow-up script and no clear route to filming it.
