Build a Rocket Boy, the studio behind MindsEye, is reportedly winding down permanently after another round of layoffs, although the company has not publicly confirmed that it is closing.

Kotaku reports that several employees said on LinkedIn that their time at the studio was coming to an end. Dan Hawkins, Build a Rocket Boy’s principal talent acquisition partner, said he would help “wrap things up” in the HR department and see the company “through till the very end”. Kotaku’s report says sources familiar with the situation also confirmed that the studio is permanently closing.

Build a Rocket Boy closing follows a difficult year

The report follows several rounds of redundancies at the developer, along with a collective grievance led by the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain. Build a Rocket Boy has also faced allegations concerning working conditions and employee monitoring. The company has not publicly responded to the latest reports.

Build a Rocket Boy released MindsEye in June 2025. The game launched to poor reviews, and the studio later attempted to improve it through updates and a relaunch. Polygon’s coverage reports that the latest employee posts included redundancy notices from staff involved in the game’s development.

The Build a Rocket Boy closing report also leaves the studio’s wider plans uncertain, including its creator-focused projects beyond MindsEye. Our earlier report on Build a Rocket Boy staff covers the workplace dispute that preceded the latest layoffs.

What happens to MindsEye now?

A confirmed closure would leave the future of MindsEye and its planned updates unclear. The available reporting does not establish whether support will continue, whether another company could take over the game, or whether Build a Rocket Boy’s wider plans will survive in another form.

For now, the closure remains reported rather than formally announced by the studio. Kotaku says it has contacted Build a Rocket Boy for comment. The situation follows other reported game-studio cuts, including layoffs at Lightspeed LA.
