Hulu cancelled the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, and Sarah Michelle Gellar has now joked that fans will never discover whether Buffy and Angel ended up together.
Gellar and David Boreanaz reunited at the 2026 Emmy Awards to present an award. Boreanaz said he had always thought Buffy and Angel would end up together. Gellar replied: “Well, I guess we won’t find out,” turning the cancelled reboot into a punchline with a surprisingly long history behind it.
The Buffy reboot was meant to continue Sunnydale
The planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot was a soft reboot set in a modern version of Sunnydale, with a new young Slayer leading the story. Gellar was attached as an executive producer and was expected to return as a recurring character, while other original cast members were linked to possible guest appearances.
James Marsters, who played Spike, previously said he expected to appear at some point, although reports suggested that would have happened in a later season. That made Angel’s possible return an open question rather than a confirmed part of the plan.
Why the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot was cancelled
Gellar confirmed in March that Hulu would not move forward with the project. Reports have since claimed the original pilot gave Buffy only a brief appearance near the end, leading Hulu to ask for a version with more screen time for Gellar.
The original pilot has also partially leaked, although the available reports do not establish what the final version would have looked like. Gellar previously blamed the cancellation on one Hulu executive who, she said, had claimed never to have been a Buffy fan.
Hulu may still be interested in another Buffy reboot in the future, but there is no confirmed replacement project. For now, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is cancelled, and the Buffy-Angel question remains exactly where television left it: unresolved.
