Why fans think this Steve Rogers might be evil
The theory is that the bearded Steve in this trailer is not the retired Cap from Endgame at all, but an alternate-universe, Hydra-aligned version. Fans have flagged a marked difference between Evans here and the earlier teaser, which showed Steve back in his Endgame house holding a baby — not that the assembled heroes on screen would notice any change.
The logic is tidy enough to be tempting. Everyone watching already knows Evans is back and already knows Doom is Downey Jr., so both of Marvel’s big “shock” cards are spent. A Steve Rogers who turns out to be working undercover for Doom would be a way to actually surprise an audience that has been over-briefed by months of reporting. Picture the film opening with Steve and his baby, then a later appearance revealing a corrupted incarnation — which is either a great twist or a lot to ask of goodwill built over a decade. Possibly both.
The obvious counter — he’s wielding Mjolnir, so he has to be worthy and therefore good — has its own rebuttal. In the comics, a Hydra-aligned Cap did wield a modified version of the hammer, and fans argue Doom, described in Marvel’s materials as a master of both advanced science and powerful magic, could plausibly manipulate the enchantment to let a corrupted Steve fool everyone.
The comics precedent behind the theory
The Hydra Cap idea comes from Marvel’s comics, specifically the Secret Empire era, where Red Skull rewrote Steve Rogers’ history to make him a lifelong follower of Hydra’s ideology. That storyline built to a showdown between a good Steve and his corrupted counterpart — the kind of good-versus-evil clash fans would love to see before Evans hangs up the shield again for good.
None of this is confirmed. Marvel has not characterised the Doomsday Steve as good, evil, or a variant in any official synopsis, and the studio’s own materials simply place Evans’ Cap among the familiar heroes joining the largest team-up yet. The official synopsis leans on scale rather than spoilers, positioning the film as the final chapter of the Multiverse Saga with heroes from three distinct universes on a collision course — a framing tbreak covered when the official Doomsday synopsis teased a massive multiversal story. Whether the miracle turns out to be a genuine one, or a wolf in a very familiar star-spangled suit, is exactly what Marvel isn’t telling us.
