What did Zach Cregger say about the Aunt Gladys prequel?
Zach Cregger says the Weapons prequel is actively being written and is “moving in the right direction”. The update came during San Diego Comic-Con, where he expressed enthusiasm about returning to Amy Madigan’s wonderfully unsettling character.
“The script is in process now and we’re taking it very seriously,” Cregger said in comments reported by our sister site IGN Middle East. “It’s being written, is the short answer.”
That wording keeps expectations sensibly grounded. Cregger has confirmed work on the screenplay, but his update did not include production timing or a release date. Aunt Gladys may know all sorts of alarming things; apparently, calendars are not among them.
Why does Cregger want to explore Gladys further?
Cregger believes Gladys has an origin story worth telling because Weapons deliberately left her past mysterious. He said the original film needed to keep the character “very opaque and very mysterious”, allowing its central device to work without unpacking her history.
A prequel gives him room to explore where Gladys came from and how she became the character audiences met in Weapons. Cregger teased “twists and turns and mysteries and crazy things” in the story, while also praising Madigan and saying he loved working with her.
Interest in a Gladys film emerged shortly after Weapons arrived in August 2025. Cregger said the following month that development talks with Warner Bros. were “not bullshit”. Trades later reported in April 2026 that Zach Shields would join him as co-writer, with the project carrying the suitably direct working title Gladys.
The latest comments therefore mark continued script progress rather than a newly announced project. For a character built around withheld answers, even the title is showing admirable restraint.
When could the Aunt Gladys prequel be released?
The Aunt Gladys prequel will follow The Flood, according to Cregger, so it is not currently positioned as his next film. He said the sci-fi thriller will come first, placing Gladys later in his schedule.
The Flood is being produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and has a release date of August 11, 2028. Cregger is also producing a Siren Head film and directing Resident Evil, giving him a crowded slate even before Gladys starts opening doors best left firmly closed.
For now, the concrete update is that a screenplay is underway and Cregger remains enthusiastic about it. Everything beyond that — including production and release timing — still awaits an official announcement.
