The Apple smart home camera reportedly will analyse activity on-device and send text alerts instead of recording video, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said on his Power On podcast, according to The Verge. Apple has not announced the device.

Apple smart home camera: text alerts instead of recordings

The Verge says Gurman described the project, internally named J450, as a companion to Apple’s rumoured J490 smart-home display. The camera is said to be a small metal cylinder with a very low frame rate. Gurman also said it would use facial recognition to report when someone enters a room. These remain reported details, not Apple specifications.

“No video recording. So it’s a sensor that cannot actually pull in real video footage. It’s analyzing your environment in your home and around your home simply using AI.”

Mark Gurman, as quoted by The Verge

The reported design would give the camera a different job from a conventional security product. An alert could say someone arrived, but there would be no clip to replay if you wanted to check what happened afterwards. Gurman said the output would be text descriptions, not footage users could watch.

Apple’s current Home camera features make that distinction clearer. The Home app can already stop streaming and recording from compatible HomeKit Secure Video cameras in some settings, while continuing to detect activity, according to The Verge. Apple’s camera setup guide also lets owners choose when a camera streams or records. That is a setting for existing cameras; the J450 report describes a device built around on-device analysis.

Apple’s current Home camera AI still uses video

Apple’s newer camera summaries do not work like the rumoured J450. Its current Home app feature analyses recorded clips, creates text descriptions and lets users search footage in natural language. Apple’s June announcement describes those summaries as a way to understand camera clips without watching them; the recordings remain part of the feature.

Apple’s support guide for Home camera notifications lists a home hub, an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone and a 2TB iCloud+ plan among the requirements for the existing feature. That system adds summaries to video. The reported Apple smart home camera would instead aim to understand activity without keeping a video recording.

That gap leaves a practical trade-off. People who do not want home video stored may welcome text-only alerts. Anyone who relies on recordings to identify a visitor, check a delivery or review a break-in would lose the evidence they use those cameras for.

Apple’s wider home-security plan is still unconfirmed

A 9to5Mac report on Gurman’s earlier Bloomberg reporting said Apple was working towards a wider home-security and monitoring service for 2027. The newer Power On report identifies the J450 camera and links it to the separate J490 hub, but does not give the camera a release date, price or subscription terms.

The J490 hub has been reported separately as part of Apple’s expected smart-home push; tbreak has covered the reported October 13 HomePad unveiling. That does not confirm the camera will appear alongside it. Apple has yet to announce the J450, its service, or where either would be sold.

Does Gurman say the camera will identify familiar people by name?

He reports facial recognition that could detect when someone enters a room, but does not say whether alerts would name known people or how owners would set up recognition. Apple has not confirmed those details.

What does Apple’s current Home camera summary feature require?

Apple lists a home hub, an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone and a 2TB iCloud+ plan among the requirements for its current Home camera summaries.

Does the reported camera require Apple’s J490 home hub?

Gurman describes J450 as a companion to the J490 smart-home display, but the report does not say whether J490 is required or whether the camera would work with existing Apple home hubs.

Does on-device AI guarantee that no camera data reaches Apple’s servers?

No such guarantee has been reported. Gurman says the analysis would happen on-device, but Apple has not explained what alerts or the reported monitoring service would transmit or retain.

Will the reported system work with third-party security cameras?

Gurman said Apple is developing first-party and third-party home-security products, but the report does not specify whether J450 would connect to existing non-Apple cameras.
