Anthropic is facing a Claude Max lawsuit from subscribers who say the company’s $100 and $200 monthly plans made their usage allowances look larger than they were. The expanded class-action complaint alleges that Anthropic’s “5x” and “20x” claims did not clearly explain rolling five-hour sessions and weekly caps.
What the Claude Max lawsuit claims
Claude Pro costs $20 a month when billed monthly. Anthropic’s Max 5x plan costs $100, while Max 20x costs $200. The plans are marketed as offering five or 20 times the usage of Pro, but the complaint argues that the comparison leaves out limits that shape how much work subscribers can actually do.
The Verge reports that the limits apply to five-hour windows and are also subject to weekly allowances. The complaint says a customer may therefore run into a cap before receiving the amount of access suggested by the headline multiplier. Anthropic’s pricing page currently says that usage limits apply to Max and that the displayed prices do not include applicable tax.
The complaint was first filed in July, withdrawn and then re-filed in expanded form. It was brought by attorneys Monica Vaca and Kati Daffan, both former Federal Trade Commission lawyers. Anthropic argued in an earlier motion to dismiss that the relevant information was available through links shown during the purchase process.
Vaca told The Verge that customers should not have to follow several links to understand what they are buying. The case is still an allegation, not a finding that Anthropic broke the law. Anthropic did not respond to The Verge’s request for comment.
What Claude Max subscribers should check
Anthropic’s published plans remain available, but the company says prices and plans can change. Anyone considering Max should read the linked usage-limit information rather than treating the 5x or 20x label as a guaranteed weekly total. That distinction is particularly relevant to developers and businesses using Claude Code or other high-volume workflows.
