Sony has seemingly removed all tweets and the announcement trailer for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake. KOTOR remake was first announced during the September 2021 PlayStation Showcase as a PS5 console exclusive and a PC release.

However, it seems the development of the game might be in trouble.

The news was first uncovered on the Gaming Leaks and Rumors subreddit and was later confirmed by Crusader II Elessar on X. When further inquired by Axios’ Editor Stephen Totilo, Sony said that the assets were removed due to the “music license expiring.” But as Totilo points out, why would the music expire for an upcoming game, especially since it is made in collaboration with LucasFilms, who, one would argue, owns everything related to Star Wars.

The only logical explanation for this would be the slow fall of Embracer Group, the parent company under which the game was developing. Aspyr studios was originally recruited to develop the remake before it shifted hands to Saber Interactive, a development studio owned by Embracer Group. However, since losing a $2 billion investment from Saudi Arabia’s Savvy Games Group, the Swedish publisher has been on a cost-cutting spree, having laid off a number of its employees, shutting down Saints Row developer Volition, and allegedly putting up Borderlands studio, Gearbox up for sale.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was originally developed by BioWare and published by LucasArts in 2003. The game is considered one of the best RPGs of all time, so an announcement of a remake was enough to excite fans of the series. But with the development scuffle, the remake seems unlikely even to be made. Regardless, here’s hoping Sony finds a way (and maybe another developer?).
