Samsung first launched its Smart TV in 2007, although then it was know then as “Internet TV”, and the Smart TV has gone a long way since then, as evident from their 2012 lineup of the Smart TV. We were fortunate to attend the launch of the 2012 Smart TV lineup in Dubai Mall, in an event that included a sci fi inspire presentations, flash mobs, a dance troupe, and of course, the almight Smart TV as the centre of the show.

To the uninitiated, Samsung’s Smart TV features the functionalities you’d expect from any “smart” device. It has internet connectivity, app support, web browsing support and social networking (you can Skype on your TV! think about the possibilities!). In addition to that, you can use your Samsung Phone and/or your Samsung Tablet to use a second screen to control the Television.

The 2012 Smart TV range includes the ES8000 series, which is available in 46 inch and 55 inch models, and the ES7500 series, which comes in 40 inch, 46 inch and 55 inch flavors. The ES series comes with advanced display technology that offer great 2D and 3D viewing experiences, Flash Player 10.2, a 55mm bezel, Micro Dimming Ultimate and dual-core processors that ensure the television is up to speed in all tasks. The Smart TV brings with it the following major features:

- Smart Interaction: The platform through which you interact with your Television includes Motion controls, Voice controls, and Face recognition. Through motion controls, you can use gestures to navigate your television, and clench your fist to “select”. You also “talk” to your television to have it switch channels, change volumes, or go to a specific channel. Samrt TV recognizes 26 languages, including Arabic.

- Smart Content: The Smart TV delivers content catered to your own tastes and preferences through Smart TV Apps, Family Story, Fitness, and Kids.

- Family Story: Samsung Smart TV offers a cloud service through which users can share images, videos and images through the virtual bulletin board. Family Story is accessible through various Samsung devices and computers

- Kids: Smart TV offers a wide range of edutainment and games for children, coupled with a kid-friendly interface that parents can monitor.

Facebook purchases Instagram

Instagram announced its transition to Android not long ago, and now looks like the App has reached another milestone. Instagram was recently purchased by social networking giants Facebook for $1 billion. The app was first launched in October 2010, and has managed to gather 30 million registered users in less than two years.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said that Instagram will still function independently from Facebook, and all the features that Instagram users have come to know and love will remain intact.

“We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience. We plan on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook. These and many other features are important parts of the Instagram experience and we understand that. We will try to learn from Instagram’s experience to build similar features into our other products. At the same time, we will try to help Instagram continue to grow by using Facebook’s strong engineering team and infrastructure”

Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom also echoed the same sentiments in a blog post on the Instagram website, saying

“It’s important to be clear that Instagram is not going away. We’ll be working with Facebook to evolve Instagram and build the network. We’ll continue to add new features to the product and find new ways to create a better mobile photos experience.”

All in all, this comes as good news, especially for Facebook for Mobile users. Facebook’s native app for uploading pictures from the phone to a Facebook profile is, to put it gently, not very good, will Instagram has got this function absolutely right. So this probably will mean a much better Facebook for Mobile experience.

Etisalat looking into using Near Field Communication with Emirates ID Card

April 5, 2012 by

Press Release:

Etisalat today announced signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA) to study the possibility of using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to develop programs that would enable Emirates ID card data to be identified and transferred using NFC-enabled mobile phones.

The signing of this memorandum supports efforts by both parties to assess the feasibility of providing such services to nationals and expatriates in the UAE. As per the terms of the agreement, the NFC services for ID card will be implemented as a pilot project for the first few months and subsequently launched on a commercial basis in the country.

Speaking on the MoU, His Excellency Engineer Nasser Al Mazroui, Executive Director, Communications and Information Systems, Emirates Identity Authority, said: “NFC can assist in providing creative, convenient and safe services for customers, while presenting new opportunities for data integration and communication. Our partnership with Etisalat continues our efforts to provide the most modern communication infrastructure for Emirates ID cardholders, who can benefit from the connectivity and compatibility of their smart cards.”

Al Mazroui highlighted that EIDA remains committed to launch several creative services following completion of the residents’ registration stage in a way that supports the e-governance initiative of the UAE and its transformation to a “digital economy.”

Highlighting the technological significance of the MoU, Marwan Al Qadi, Ag. Sr. Director of Electronic & Mobile Commerce, Etisalat, said: “Today, mobile phones have become the most important personal item for individuals, and I am glad to note that Etisalat is developing solutions that are optimizing the value and utility of mobile phones for customers. Mobile NFC is making the ‘internet of things’ a reality today by creating NFC links that can be used to connect remotely to target sites using phones. We are already seeing its many benefits in areas such as shopping, e-payments and cross-media functions.

“I must also applaud the vision of EIDA in identifying the potential advantages presented by this technology for ID cardholders,” Al Qadi added.

Near Field Communication, or NFC, is a short-range, high frequency wireless communication technology. NFC provides secure wireless communication between internet networked smart NFC devices, such as NFC mobile phones, and NFC enabled objects or other NFC receptions devices such as other mobile phones, payment terminals or identification readers.

The Near Field Communication technology concept is applied on any two devices separated by a short distance, where a smart card is used and short-range radio frequencies technique is applied to connect them.

Google MENA launches YouTube UAE

April 2, 2012 by

Google has recently announced the launched of YouTube UAE. The Emirates now joins other Middle Eastern countries like Egypt, Algeria, Jordan and Saudia Arabia in having a localized version of the popular video sharing website. Full press release below.

Press Release:

It’s amazing to think that just six years ago, YouTube didn’t exist. Since then, the video platform has assembled sights and sounds from around the world — the largest collection of its kind. Today, we are pleased to announce a new user experience in the Emirates by launching YouTube.co.ae – a local version of YouTube.

A local version of YouTube means that people who visit the site will see on the homepage the most popular videos in the UAE along with those that are rising in popularity. If you create and upload a video, other people in the UAE– and possibly around the world — are more likely to be able to find and watch your creation.

From YouTube’s inception, people in the Middle East have been active members of the global community, both watching and uploading countless videos. YouTube in MENA is growing exponentially with more the number of playbacks doubling in the past year and users in MENA upload one hour of video per minute. There are 167 million video views a day in MENA, putting the region in the number two spot in the world, behind the U.S. and ahead of Brazil.

“We have seen enormous growth for YouTube in the MENA region and expect this expansion to continue even more significantly with the launch of the UAE domain.” said Ari kesisoglu, Managing Director, Middle East North Africa at Google.  “A primary objective for us is to encourage local content from regional users, which we believe will be fuelled by this latest development.”

Even though YouTube is a global service, we try to make it as local as possible. In 2010, we offered Arabic as a language choice for the first time. In 2011, we deepened the local YouTube experience by providing local versions of YouTube in seven countries in the Middle East: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Yemen. We now proudly add the UAE to this list.

Of course, the YouTube community reflects the whole world, with its vast differences of ethnicity, religion, nationality, language, politics and more. Not everything on YouTube will please everyone, and we encourage people to actively participate, learntherules and flag content that might violate them. In the end, YouTube is a place where people go to exchange all kinds of ideas, and we want Emiratis to join the conversation, bringing their rich content to users around the world.

United introduces Brocade to deliver HDTV and Online Viewing Services

March 29, 2012 by

Press Release:

As the broadcast industry faces up to the challenge of delivering multiplatform content and high definition (HD) video to consumers, United – part of the Euro Media Group (EMG) and a full-service company providing facilities, technical and creative support for multimedia audiovisual productions – has turned to Brocade (Nasdaq: BRCD) to deliver an end-to-end data center networking solution based on Ethernet fabric technology and its 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) core routing platform.

The new deployment will provide the performance, elasticity and resilience needed to support higher traffic volumes and daily data volumes in its video production environment that are approaching 16 terabytes. The Brocade® network will also reduce operational cost and complexity for United Broadcast Facilities’ IT department while providing a seamless, cost-effective path for high-density deployment of 100 GbE technology.

United provides onsite broadcast facilities for large sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup. It also manages more than 45 percent of all Dutch TV productions and works with international broadcasters such as NBC, Warner and ESPN by providing post-production services that include audio-visual rendering and trans-coding for multiplatform delivery (such as video on demand).

Confronted with the challenge of managing multiple data feeds for various clients – all demanding secure access/delivery of content – United looked to significantly update and simplify its networking architecture to improve service levels to its customers.

“In our line of work, managing huge data volumes is nothing new. However, over the past two years it had become all too apparent that our disparate IT environment was no longer fit for our constantly evolving business needs. Coming at the same time as a planned move to a new facility by consolidating four buildings into one, we knew that the time was right to make a wholesale change to our data center network, radically improve performance, and also take an innovative approach to its design,” said Marc Ruesen, manager of Business Development at United.

Specifically, United turned to Brocade VCS™ technology and the Brocade VDX™ 6720 Data Center Switches, part of the growing Brocade VDX product family as well as the primary building blocks for Ethernet fabrics that have revolutionized the design of Layer 2 networks inside of data centers. Brocade Ethernet fabrics are designed to improve network utilization, maximize application availability, increase scalability and dramatically simplify network architectures in highly virtualized data centers.

At the network core, Brocade MLXe Series core routers provide the breakthrough 10 GbE performance and scalability to support the firm’s rising application traffic demands and deliver reliable services using less hardware — vastly improving operational efficiency and driving down capital cost. Additionally, the Brocade MLXe provides a seamless, cost-effective path for high-density deployment of 100 GbE technology.

The Ethernet fabric and MLXe deployment are elements of a holistic network upgrade that includes the following Brocade product lines:
- Brocade NetIron® CER 2000 Series routers will be deployed to deliver high-performance Ethernet edge routing and MPLS applications, and by providing enhanced scalability and flexibility, meet the dynamic needs for higher bandwidth services.
- Brocade FCX Series, Brocade FastIron® SX Series and Brocade FastIron WS Series switches, along with Brocade ServerIron® ADX Series application delivery switches, will be rolled out across the environment in conjunction with Brocade Mobility Access Points and Controllers to form a campus-wide deployment.
- Brocade Converged Network Adapters (CNAs) enable transport over a 10 GbE connection through Data Center Bridging (DCB) and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) protocols, providing best-in-class LAN connectivity and I/O consolidation to reduce cost and complexity.
- Brocade Network Advisor provides end-to-end visibility across different network types through a seamless and unified user experience

“This was an ambitious project, but one that I am delighted to have taken on. Having used Brocade SAN solutions in the data center for many years, we knew that Brocade offered class-leading performance. The new Ethernet fabric-based environment gives us a far stronger proposition to take to market as we have the performance and flexibility to deal with anything our clients ask of us,” added Ruesen.

Alberto Soto, Vice President EMEA at Brocade commented, “Through our data center networking and Ethernet fabric solutions, we are delivering platforms that are unparalleled in today’s market. In the media industry, demand will only grow. It is a huge advantage to have an environment that offers seamless scalability and performance without requiring complicated management protocols. United has found such a solution with Brocade.”
