Stuck for some tech ideas this festive season? We’ve got your back.

Tis the season to be jolly, and if you’re like me it’s also the season your wallet takes a good beating. The festive season is nearly upon us, and soon the stores will be full of people snatching up last-minute purchases for their near and dear ones. And while the true spirit of the season is in spending time with family and friends, we can’t deny that oh-so-thrilling feeling of ripping apart wrapping paper to see what awaits us.

So rather than spend your time rustling through the bargain bin of your local electronics store for gift ideas, let us help you pick out some gadgets that are sure to bring plenty of smiles. Shall we go shopping?

For anyone who wants to enjoy their favorite tunes, you can’t go wrong in splurging for a good pair of headphones. You could be queuing up some great tracks on your mp3 player, but if you’ve got a crap pair of headphones, then no matter what you listen to you’re not going to enjoy it.

Parrot Zik Wireless Headphones – AED 1,499

The Parrot Zik Wireless Headphones offer great dynamic range for brilliant audio reproduction, and the active noise cancelling works great to ensure you have a noise-free listening experience. While other noise-cancelling headphones are bulk and uncomfortable to wear, the Parrot Zik Wireless Headphones are much more comfortable and can be paired with either your smartphone or compatible mp3 player for true audio bliss.

Second choice: harman/kardon BT Wireless Headphones – AED 1,099

Our mobile phones have long evolved from being bulky 8-bit sounding bricks with monochrome displays. Today they are sleek, shiny, and blazingly fast. So naturally, the festive season is as good as time as any other to nab a new smartphone for yourself or for someone you know who’s in desperate need of being brought into the 21st century.

Samsung Galaxy Note II – AED 2,499

We were really impressed with the Samsung Galaxy Note II, and just how much it improved upon the original. Not quite phone and not quite tablet, the Note II features an amazing screen, great battery life, and super speeds no matter what you throw at it. The included ‘S Pen’ is more than just a gimmick, and you’ll be surprised just how often you use it to manipulate items on the screen. While it may be bigger than your average smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Note II has plenty of plus points that will make it hard to put down.
Second choice: Apple iPhone 5

Like the smartphone, laptops have come a long way in recent years, growing lighter and thinner while still delivering some truly exceptional results. In the coming months, we’ll see a barrage of laptops cross over into tablet terrain, offering the processing power of a laptop with the portability of a tablet.

ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A – AED 6,299

When we first got our hands on the ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A, we “ooooed” and “aaaah’d” at it before one of us struck up the nerve to actually turn it on. It’s a beautiful device for sure, and one that sets the bar pretty high up for other Ultrabooks. Featuring a full-HD display, an i7 CPU and a functional yet stylish design, the ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A will certainly make a worthy upgrade from the gigantic laptop you’re probably currently using.
Second choice: Lenovo Yoga – AED 4,200

What list would be complete without rambling on about tablets? The tablet market has surged in recent months, and users now have a plethora of options and devices to consider when looking to buy a tablet. So, which one should you really get?

The New iPad (2012) – AED 1,799 (16GB WiFi)

Apple hit the nail on the head when the launched the first iPad, and of course drove thousands to queue up outside Apple stores to get their hands on this amazing new type of device. And sure enough, when the iPad 2 was released there were throngs of people lining up to get the thinner and faster iPad. When Apple announced the ‘new’ iPad this year, they didn’t make too many changes to it, instead opting to bump up the processor and introduce the gorgeous Retina display. With a huge arsenal of apps in the App Store, the iPad still remains a must-buy around the festive season, though it’s now fighting off competition from the likes of Android and the recently released Surface tablet.
Second choice: Toshiba AT270 – AED 1,899
