Sennheiser is no stranger to making great in-ear headphones, and indeed have been making headsets for iOS devices for some while now. The CX890i are the latest in their range of high-end headphones for Apple devices by Sennheiser, so let’s see how good they really are.
One of the first things you’ll notice about the Sennheiser CX890i is their unique design. Basically a sapphire-like dome casing is created to give it that transparent feel, while the PCB’s green color and black metal components give it a distinctive look and feel.
Following down you have the remote control with built-in mic that acts as your control system for receiving calls and handling audio tracks. The remote is coated in a silver finish, which, I’m afraid will wear out as time passes; otherwise get easily scratched.
Each earpiece comes with three exchangeable ear covers of different sizes (S/M/L) and can easily be switched. There’s also a nice leather case for you to store the CX890i and its accompanying ear covers.
Given that it’s designed for iOS devices, the CX890i has a low impedance of just 32 Ω, so pretty much any smartphone or tablet can be used without it sound as if the volume wasn’t high enough. As for the sound quality itself, the CX890i excel in pretty much every department. The mids crystal clear and the highs, while clean, aren’t as precise as I would have preferred. This does mean that trance tracks are not as transparent as I would have preferred, but the strong bass is a nice offset. It’s not irritating or muddles up the vocals, so if you like hiphop and pop, the CX890i will suit you nicely.
The mic itself is suitable, although it does carry over some background noise in crowded areas. The in-ear design means almost complete sound isolation from outside noise, while the closed design means that nobody else minds whatever you’re listening to.
The Sennheiser CX890i are a nice pair of headphones, the included remote control with built-in mic does an apt job during calls. With great sound quality and very distinctive looks, the CX890i is a very impressive headset, although you should take a look at some of Sennheiser’s other offerings if these seem to be out of your budget.
Think you can make the next big app? Then ‘The Midnight Developer Challenge’ is where you want to be. In a move to promote local talent, Nokia and Microsoft will be hosting its first, and region’s biggest student app development competition from this month. The competition aims to provide students with exposure and training in the latest mobile and app development technologies in order to help them make the next Flipboard or WhatsApp.
Participating students will receive three months of technical training and coding sessions with Nokia and Microsoft software experts through weekly webinars and online support. Both the companies promises to work closely with students to help them conceptualize their ideas, and also with the universities to ensure full faculty support is provided for students who are participating in the competition.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for students to get real life experience in designing, developing and distributing a mobile app for consumers in an emerging app economy,” said Joe Devassy, Head of Developer Experience, Nokia IMEA. “We designed this competition to maximise the learning process of this entrepreneurial journey – that is, how to go from an abstract idea to a fully-developed Windows Phone 8 app available to millions of consumers worldwide.”
“This initiative, which empowers young local talent with world-class opportunities to develop and learn about the latest advances in mobile app technology, is testament to our commitment to the region. Windows Phone 8 is a great mobile platform and there is immense opportunity for developers to leverage and utilise the innovative features of the Nokia Lumia range including augmented reality navigation, NFC and imaging,” said Amintas Lopes Neto, Academia and Startups Lead, Microsoft MEA.
The contest will be divided into two categories – Apps and Games. Both categories will have a winner and runner’s up, with a total $33,000 worth of cash up for grabs. The winning team will receive $10,000 in cash, a trip to a Nokia Global event, and an Xbox 360 and Lumia 920 for each team member. The runner’s up team will receive $5,000 in cash, and an Xbox 360 and Lumia 920 for each team member. Participants of the competition will also have the opportunity to be eligible for the annual Microsoft Imagine Cup 2013 Windows Phone Challenge.

These are some of the common posts I see on Facebook when looking at brand pages. But while they may make you cringe, the social media platform has grown incredibly in the MENA region, with a 29% growth in the number of new user registrations. That equates to about 21 new registrations per minute, at least according to an infographic by social media analytics platform Socialbakers. The infographic lists Egypt as the largest user registration in the region with 11.9 million, followed by Saudi Arabia with 5.9 million – the UAE sits with a respectable 3.3 million users.

After Etisalat announced that pre-orders for iPhone 5 will start today, the second telco in the UAE, du, has announced similar plans as well. The iPhone 5 will be available to pre-order from du starting today along with a promotion to possibly win an iPhone 5 every hour. du has also clarified that LTE is being tested with their network and iPhone 5 and will be enabled through an update once its ready to roll. du today announced it will offer iPhone 5 in the UAE for pre-booking beginning 09 December. iPhone 5 will be available for AED 2,749 for the 16GB model, AED 3,199 for the 32GB model and AED3,599 for the 64GB model, and can be pre-booked online through shop.du.ae or across all du shops.
du has tailor-made offers for existing and new customers to select from depending on their needs. Customers can decide between Monthly Plans or Pay as you Go plans.
