Nokia’s new generation of personal mapping is here…Err, no pun intended.
Nokia has launched a revamp of its popular maps services called HERE. It’s HTML5-powered, and works on just about any platform including iOS (new maps alternative for iOS 6 users, yay!), and Android. Windows Phone 8 is also supported of course, with better integration, and an app.
HERE is a smooth, slick map service, and those have been using Nokia Maps knows that it’s excellent, too. It is also the only map provider that provides traffic indication in the UAE.
HERE offers a couple of new features, namely Collections and Map Creator. ‘Collections’ allows you to save and share places, and take them anywhere with you, regardless of the platform you are using. Look it as a uni-platform Favorites cloud. ‘Map Creator’ is what the name suggests, which allows users to update and edit maps with simple tools. Unforunately, Map Creator is not available for UAE yet.
It’s still rough around the edges. The 3D mode does not work too well, and the maps refuses to save your location. But other parts of the maps appear to be robust, so we are sure all the niggles will be ironed out soon.
If you have been looking for a Google Maps, this might be it. Give it a try here.
