Feature to initially be used to generate one-time passwords.

MasterCard are upping their tech prowess with the announcement that future versions of their cards will incorporate a tiny display and touch-sensitive keyboard.

In collaboration with Standard Charted Bank Singapore, he system will be used to generate ‘one-time passwords’, which can be used to verify online purchases or other transactions, something that is currently relegated to text messages or the user having to assign a special cryptic password, or carrying around a special keychain that automatically generates the security token.

While the system is still in its early stages, future versions might even be able to display your current account balance or what your last transaction was, though if you’re married to a shopaholic you might want to keep that information even more private than your PIN.
