A sturdy little companion.

Targus is a brand name synonymous for laptop bags, but accessories are also a huge part of their product portfolio. As such it’s not surprising to see a mouse from the world famous ‘case’ company. Today I’ll be doing a quick look for their AMW50EU wireless optical Blue Trace mouse.

Measuring 110 x 60 x 35mm, the Targus AMW50EU is small enough to easily lug it around with your laptop, but just about big enough to works on your desktop as well. However, with an 800 DPI optical sensor the Targus AMW50EU should only be used as a last resort; unless you have a sub-HD resolution monitor.

With a glossy black top and grey lined bottom and sides, the Targus AMW50EU certainly looks like an elegant mouse. You’ll notice that it sadly doesn’t come with any side buttons for forward/ backward operations, so you’ll just get the most basic of mouse functionality.

The good thing is that this basic functionality can be had pretty much everywhere. The Targus AMW50EU comes with a Blue Trace optical sensor which is basically a combination of laser and optical sensors for ‘tracking on almost any surface’, according to Targus.

Well, I tried it on wood, cloth, shiny and glossy plastic surfaces, and the Targus AMW50EU works well on all of them. I even tried running it on our office windows, and apart from a few skips here and there, it was overall very useable for office and internet browsing work. On a glass surface covering picture frames it wasn’t working well, as expected. Of course, the Targus AMW50EU, like any other mouse, works best on a dedicated matt (but smooth) surface, yet it’ll still work on pretty much anything, just not good enough to play FPS games on!

As with other laptop mice, the mini-USB adapter can be plugged into under the Targus AMW50EUas there’s enough space for housing it. Battery life is also very impressive, with two supplied AA Energizer batteries lasting close to a month now, after daily (6+ hours) usage.

The Targus AMW50EU is an impressive mouse for what it is, what with the Blue Trace sensor and great battery life. And with a price of just AED 110, the Targus AMW50EU makes for a very compelling purchase.
